Singer, activist, and the Queen of Soul. Aretha Franklin’s life story will unfold on the big screen in the upcoming drama musical biopic, Respect. Jennifer Hudson, the singer-actress who recently starred as Grizabella in the film Cats, was handpicked by the late music icon herself to play the role.

The movie follows Aretha Franklin’s career– from a child singing in her father’s church’s choir to her international superstardom. It tells the remarkable true story of the music icon’s journey to find her voice.
Respect is directed by Liesl Tommy with a screenplay from Tracey Scott Wilson. It also stars Forest Whitaker, Mary J. Blige, Marlon Wayans, and Tituss Burgess alongside Hudson. The film is expected to roll out in local theaters soon.
