Kristen Stewart of the Twilight Saga and the recent Charlie’s Angels reboot has been chosen to play Princess Diana in the upcoming drama film Spencer, Deadline reports.
The film will be directed by Pablo Larraín with a script from Peaky Blinders writer Steven Knight. It will be set in the ‘90s, specifically during the three days when Diana spent one of her final Christmas holidays in the House of Windsor, after she had decided that her marriage with Prince Charles was not working anymore.
“We all grew up, at least I did in my generation, reading and understanding what a fairy tale is,” Larraín told Deadline. “Usually, the prince comes and finds the princess, invites her to become his wife and eventually she becomes queen. That is the fairy tale. When someone decides not to be the queen, and says, I’d rather go and be myself, it’s a big big decision, a fairy tale upside down. I’ve always been very surprised by that and thought it must have been very hard to do. That is the heart of the movie.”
The production for Spencer is scheduled to begin in early 2021.
Kristen Stewart is best known for her role as Bella Swan in the popular YA romance film franchise, the Twilight Saga. Her former onscreen partner, Robert Pattinson, will also be returning to the big screen soon through the films The Batmanand Tenet. Stephenie Meyer, the author of the books from which the films were based, also announced that she will be releasing the latest book in the series this August.
