Malaysia Bans ‘Hustlers,’ Will Be Screening R-16 in PH

'Hustlers' may have been stripped off from Malaysian theaters, but the J. Lo film that charmed critics is coming to the Philippines!

A heist flick with the Magic Mike vibe, Hustlers is already making a lot of buzz from moviegoers, first after defying its makers' expectations for its opening week, and now because Jennifer Lopez is receiving positive acclaim from critics who even went as far as saying that her performance in the film could garner awards from the Golden Globes and Oscars.

The film opened with $33 million placing second at the box office, a feat the film's creators didn't expect as the film was poised to make only around $25 million on its opening, as reported by CNN Business. The film quickly became J. Lo's biggest live-action film opening while Constance Wu, who plays as Destiny in the film also got her Crazy Rich Asians' opening beat by around $7 million.

While others are excited to see Hustlers, potential viewers from Malaysia instead received some hassling news after the Malaysian Film Censorship Board banned the flick in their country. This is to be expected, however, as Malaysia had been known for cutting, if not completely banning films to suit the Board's criteria.

Inspired by true events, Hustlers takes its story from a New York Magazine article by Jessica Pressler titled The Hustlers as Score. In the film, Jennifer Lopez stars as the stripper Ramona, who leads a group of exotic dancers in using their occupation to hustle money from their drunk and drugged Wall Street clients.

Swindling and fraud becomes the women's way of getting back to the rich and cruel men of Wall Street who they deem responsible for the global economic collapse at the time. While the film has its share of nudity, sexual themes, and misuse of drugs, there is a relevant tale behind all of it that definitely charmed the critics.

Hustlers is directed by Lorene Scafaria, and it stars Constance Wu, Cardi B, Keke Palmer, and Lizzo alongside producer J. Lo. An uncut film with R-16 rating will premiere in the Philippines on September 25, 2019.
