Secrets Never Die: “I Know What You Did Last Summer” Slashes Back to the Big Screen

Horror’s Golden Era Just Got a Killer Update
Remember that one summer you wanted to forget? So do they.

The scream-worthy 1997 hit I Know What You Did Last Summer is slashing its way back to cinemas—reimagined, reinvigorated, and ready to haunt a whole new generation. Producer Neal H. Moritz, the original mind behind the franchise, is once again behind the wheel… and this time, the stakes are sharper than ever.
“Horror fans have always had a soft spot for this franchise, and we felt there was still something here – a great central idea that could resonate with a new generation. We came at the new film with passion for the material, a willingness to evolve the story, and a real respect for the fans who still talk about the original.”

A Familiar Secret with a Dangerous New Twist
In this stylish reboot, a fateful accident binds five friends in a deadly pact. They vow to keep it buried, but one year later, someone’s back—and they remember everything. As their mysterious stalker closes in, the group uncovers a horrifying truth: this isn’t the first time it’s happened.
To unravel the nightmare, they must turn to the survivors of the Southport Massacre—the only ones who’ve lived to tell the tale.

Directed With Heart—and Horror
At the helm is writer-director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, bringing her unique energy and a touch of nostalgia. A longtime fan of the original, Robinson’s connection to the franchise runs deep.
“The original was the first R-rated movie I ever snuck into,” she recalls. “My babysitter wanted to see it, and I ended up going with her. Afterwards, my mom got really angry, but I didn’t care because I was so mesmerized by it.”
With her signature style, Robinson revives the crackling tension and witty tone of Kevin Williamson’s original script while crafting something bold and brand new.
“I wanted the film to be big, brash and scary, but also retain the crackly fun, clever, witty vibe of the first movie,” Robinson says. “We made certain that Kevin Williamson’s amazing tone was present, while making sure to offer a fresh take. I think the tone rides that perfect line between modern horror and throwback summer slasher.”

The Horror of Human Mistakes
Beyond the blood and suspense lies a story rooted in reality—about the ripple effect of one bad decision.
“This movie is about people making a mistake, then making the wrong choice, and the consequences that follow. It’s a deeply human story. Anyone could mess up like our characters do. That’s what sucks you into the story, because you’re thinking, what would I do in this situation? For me, horror is most interesting when it’s grounded in very real stakes.”
