The magic of Oz is coming to life! Universal Pictures unveils an exciting behind-the-scenes look at Wicked, the cinematic adaptation of the beloved stage musical, giving fans a peek into the journey of bringing this spellbinding story to the big screen. Set to premiere in Philippine cinemas on November 20, Wicked promises a breathtaking, immersive experience unlike any other.

“Oz is a Place of Endless Possibilities,” Says Jon M. Chu

Renowned director Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich AsiansIn the Heights) invites audiences to experience the magic of Oz in a whole new way. “Oz represents a place of magic, so to be able to invite an audience into this beautiful world is exciting,” Chu shares. This adaptation is the first installment of a two-part cinematic experience, with Wicked Part Two scheduled for release in 2025.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande Bring Iconic Roles to Life

Cynthia Erivo, an Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award-winning actress, takes on the role of Elphaba, the misunderstood witch with a powerful destiny. For Erivo, feels that Oz is the land of endless possibilities. “The things you think are impossible, the things you are dreaming about, aren’t impossible at all,” she says. This theme of inner potential and self-discovery lies at the heart of Wicked.

Alongside Erivo is global music sensation Ariana Grande as Glinda, who also seeks to uncover her own inner magic. Grande explains, “Glinda, just like Elphaba, just wants to find her magic,” she says. Erivo also talks about the power within Elphaba. “It isn’t about relying on someone else, it really is about harnessing the power she has, and figuring out how to use that to do good the way she needs to,” she says. The evolving relationship between these two powerful yet conflicted characters brings a fresh depth to the story, exploring how each discovers their unique purpose in a complex world.

A Spellbinding Ensemble Cast

The film’s cast includes Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as the dashing Fiyero, and Ethan Slater as the kind-hearted Boq. Jeff Goldblum takes on the legendary role of the Wizard, bringing his signature flair to this pivotal character. New faces and familiar favorites populate this vibrant world, including Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James, Keala Settle, and Peter Dinklage, all adding their unique touches to Oz.

The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz

Adapted from Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel and the iconic stage production by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, Wicked tells the story of Elphaba and Glinda before Dorothy arrived. Audiences will discover the untold history of these two women who come to terms with power, purpose, and friendship in a world where “nothing is just one dimension,” as Erivo puts it.

This highly anticipated adaptation is produced by industry giants Marc Platt (La La LandThe Little Mermaid) and David Stone (Next to Normal), with original creators Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman on board to bring the story to life on screen.
