Why Disney’s ‘Moana’ is a Pretty Big Deal

Disney's new animated adventure 'Moana' is set to dazzle soon across all Philippine theaters on November 30, and it's set to change, reimagine and redefine the typical princess movie.

Disney's new animated adventure 'Moana' is set to dazzle soon across all Philippine theaters on November 30, and it's set to change, reimagine and redefine the typical princess movie. The upcoming CG-animated adventure is about Moana, a spirited teenager sailing out on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder and fulfill an unfinished quest of her ancestors.

Moana is quite a big deal because it definitely isn't your average Disney princess nor the usual animated movie — it'll take you to surprising twists and turns, and refresh the way you view animation films. For one, its leading lady doesn't look like your typical animated princess.

Disney's creative team portrays Moana as realistic and relatable, with a strong body type that matches her personality — an action adventure film needs a physically strong and active lead, after all, and body positivity is not just a trend — it's something important that will stay. Having little kids look up to a brave and strong action princess is always a good thing!

This is also the first time Disney is painting the culture and mystical stories of the South Pacific, featuring its first Polynesian princess in Moana. Much research was made prior to the film production, with directors immersing themselves into the Polynesian culture and traveling often to the different islands. Talents of Polynesian descent are also involved in making this film come to life, Dwayne Johnson being one of them (he's of Samoan heritage).

Another thing that makes this princess story important and different is that our leading lady here isn't looking for a prince — in fact, Moana doesn't even have a romantic storyline. No prince? No problem. This film shows how a personal journey and the most exciting adventures in life doesn't really require any romantic interests.

For Disney-heads and veterans, this last bit will make you extra excited to catch this film on the big screen soon: the directors of both Little Mermaid and Aladdin join forces to bring to life the exciting, dazzling, and colorful tale of Moana. Shall it be shining, shimmering splendid and win over your heart and become part of your world? Find out very soon when it opens across all theaters very soon. For now, here's a taste of the music of Moana, which by the way, has songs co-written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton fans, anyone?). Listen below to the clip of 'You're Welcome' sung by Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson himself.

"Moana" sails into Philippine theaters on November 30, 2016, and is distributed in the Philippines by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures through Columbia Pictures. Follow on Facebook (WaltDisneyStudiosPH), Twitter (@disney_phil) and Instagram (@disney.ph) and use the hashtag #MoanaPH
