Train Like a Jedi: 7 Essentials in Becoming a ‘Star Wars’ Jedi in Real Life

Interested in the Jedi path? Here's a step by step guide to becoming a Jedi so you too can use the force.

From watching Episode IV: A New Hope to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and now that Star Wars: The Last Jedi is coming up, we're pretty sure these Star Wars movies make you wish you could be a real life Jedi… or at least live the Jedi life!

You may not be able to fly around the universe fighting the dark side of the force or walk around with a lightsaber clasped to your belt, but there are definitely some parts of being a Jedi you can incorporate in your life. Don't worry, you're not fighting anyone from the Sith Order! Interested in the Jedi path? Here's a step by step guide to being as close to a real life Jedi so you too can use the force.

1. Understand the Jedi Ranks

Having been present in the galaxy for over one thousand generations, the Jedis were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. There are five Jedi ranks, two Jedi military ranks and five Jedi occupations.

Initially, a young child who is sensitive to the Force would be identified at birth and taken to the Jedi Temple to be trained as a Jedi. These Jedi Younglings would be put into classes and trained together before being taken as an apprentice by a Jedi Knight. When a youngling have been chosen by a Jedi Knight or a Jedi Master to be trained until they become a fully fledged Jedi Knight on their own, they become a Padawan where they must successfully pass a series of tests.

When they pass the Jedi trials, they are granted the rank of Jedi Knight where they go on missions of their own, with no help of a master. When they show great skill, wisdom and devotion to the Force, a Jedi Knight is offered a seat on the Jedi High Council as a Jedi Master. Lastly, the Grand Master is the leader of the High Council. This position is given to the oldest and considered to be the wisest member of the Jedi Order.

2. Dress Like a Jedi

Now that you have a grasp on the different ranks of a Jedi, we can now tackle on how to dress like a true Jedi. You have to understand that it's all about living a simple life when you become a Jedi. Avoid anything flashy and instead, wear colors and tones that are muted. Remember that the Jedi tend to abstain from indulgence; make sure this is what you aim for now.

3. Take the Jedi Code to Heart

Memorize the Jedi code… or at least take it to heart! The Jedi code is a great mantra you can remember when you're feeling frustrated about your surroundings. Read it, memorize it, print it, hang it on your wall and commit to it:

There is no emotion, there is peace.
There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no chaos, there is harmony.
There is no passion, there is serenity.
There is no death, there is the Force.

4. Invest in Weaponry

Powered by a kyber crystal, the lightsaber is a weapon used by the Jedi and their opposites, the Sith. It is a blade made of pure energy which has different colors indicating the Jedi's chosen class: blue indicates a Jedi Guardian and green indicates a Jedi Consular.

Sure, it's a fictional energy sword but you can get your own lightsaber here.

5. Find your Own Yoda

Have you ever questioned your existence? In times like these, a little external guidance is all we need. Let's face it, we all need a mentor to get through tough decisions and who will lead you to a path of success. Whether you've just graduated high school or experiencing a midlife crisis, a role model is a little nudge you need to inspire you to achieve more than you already have. Just like what Yoda said in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, “Always two there are, no more, no less. A master and an apprentice.”

6. Train like a real Jedi

The Jedi Path is not about being violent but being fit and capable are essential if you want to be one. Being a Jedi is the same as achieving about anything else; it involves developing certain skills and honing it until you're great at it. In the Old Republic, a Jedi trained for years — from a youngling to being a Jedi Master or better yet, a Grand Master. There are a number of workouts you can find online; and you don't need the help of a tiny green Jedi Master to accomplish it!

7. Live the Jedi life and join communities

Look for Jedi communities online so you can talk to like minded individuals and people who have lived the Jedi life for quite some time now. There are local groups like Fightsaber, Philippine Lightsaber Guild and so much more, bringing together Philippine-based fans from that galaxy far, far away.

Are you ready to choose the Jedi path? Discover your destiny when Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15, 2017. The film is distributed in the Philippines by Walt Disney Motion Pictures through Columbia Pictures.
