The Philippine Cinema Centennial is upon us, and this is why now's the best time that we strengthen our support on our local films, from Cinemalaya to PPP.

During its grand launch, Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino 2019 (PPP) has finally revealed the 10 official finalists that will bring life to this year's annual film festival. Now on its third year, the PPP will be showing these local titles in theaters nationwide from September 13 to 19. The festival will showcase seven feature films and three 'PPP Sandaan Showcase' films.

Tolkien
Premieres on:
September 4

A biographical drama on the famed author of novels "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings", Tolkien tells the story of young J.R.R. Tolkien who finds love, friendship, and inspiration from a group of fellow outcasts. It also shows all the things he had experienced – from the outbreak of World War War 1 to his romance with Edith Bratt – which later inspired him to write his classic works. The film stars Nicholas Hoult, Lily Collins, Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson, and more. 

The Goldfinch
Premieres on: September 18

The Goldfinch is a film based on the book of the same name and stars Ansel Elgort as Theo Decker, who last saw his mother when he was 13 years old, as they were caught in a terrorist bomb explosion in a museum. This tragedy changes his life and brings him to an odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, friendship, and love. Joining Elgort are Nicole Kidman, Finn Wolfhard, Sarah Paulson, Luke Wilson, and more. 

Rambo: Last Blood
Premieres on: September 19

In Rambo: Last Blood, Rambo crosses the US-Mexico border to rescue his friend's daughter who has been kidnapped. There, he finds himself fighting against Mexico's most ruthless cartels. The film stars Sylvester Stallone, Paz Vega, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, and Adriana Barraza. 

One Piece: Stampede
Premieres on: September 20 

One Piece: Stampede is the fourteenth film in the One Piece series, and is also based on the manga by Eiichiro Oda. It takes place during the Pirates Expo where all the pirates go on a treasure hunt to find the treasure that belongs to Gold Roger. 

Downton Abbey
Premiering on: September 25

Downton Abbey is based on the television of the same name and centers on the Crawley family and their servants who worked for them during the 20th century. The film is set 18 months after the show's last episode when King George V and Queen Mary pays a visit to Downton. 

Abominable
Premieres on: September 27

Abominable centers on the teenage Yi, who meets a young Yeti on the roof of her apartment building in Shanghai. Naming him "Everest", she goes on a quest with the magical creature, along with her friends – Jin and Peng –  for him to be reunited with his family at the highest point on Earth. To do this, they need to be ahead of Burnish, a man who wants to capture a Yeti, and the zoologist Dr. Zara. Chloe Bennett, Norgay Trainor, Albert Tsai, Eddie Izzard, and Sarah Paulson will be lending their voices for the film.
