Bibliophiles, it's time to rejoice!

Other than the usual movies we're looking forward to this year, this year will once again be a huge thing for book lovers with a number of book-to-film adaptations that will hit theaters. From science fiction to classic literary pieces, 2019 is sure to give each of us an adaptation we'll love. Here are upcoming films that may reintroduce you to characters you already have read:

1.  The Rhythm Section
Based on ‘The Rhythm Section’ by Mark Burnell
Release Date: February 22, 2019

The film follows the story of Stephanie Patrick, a woman whose life fell into drugs and prostitution after a plane crash that killed her family. After discovering that the crash was not an accident, Stephanie joins an intelligence organization where she takes on different identities in order to track down those responsible for the death of her loved ones.
 

2.  Chaos Walking
Based on “The Knife of Never Letting Go’ by Patrick Ness (Book 1 of the Chaos Walking trilogy)
Release Date: March 1, 2019

This science-fiction film introduces the New World, where a viral germ is said to have killed all women and caused the phenomenon called the Noise, wherein people can hear the thoughts of all creatures. Todd Hewitt, whose mind is also cluttered with Noise, discovers silence after meeting a girl named Viola. The two discovers more about their planet and try to save it. The film stars Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley for the main roles.
 

3.  Greyhound
Based on ‘The Good Shepherd’ by C.S. Forester
Release Date: March 22, 2019

A war-flick, Greyhound follows the hero Commander Krause, who was made captain of the destroyer called Keeling. Krause starts to doubt his abilities even as German U-boats threaten them. Directed by Aaron Schneider, the film features Tom Hanks, who also wrote the screenplay for the film.

 

4.  Where’d You Go, Bernadette?
Based on ‘Where’d You Go, Bernadette?’ by Maria Semple
Release Date: March 22, 2019

A comedic film, this movie adaptation tells the story of an agoraphobic architect and mother Bernadette Fox who goes missing before a family trip to Antarctica. It is up to her daughter Bee to find her by piecing together a series of e-mails, invoices, and school memos that leads to Bernadette’s secret past.
 

5.  Pet Sematary
Based on ‘Pet Sematary’ by Stephen King
Release Date: April 4, 2019

The dead will rise once again for the remake of the movie adaptation of the Stephen King classic. It tells about Louis Creed and his family moving to a rural home which lies near the eerie pet burial grounds dubbed as the ‘Pet Sematary.’ After the tragic death of their cat, Louis resorts to burying it on the mysterious cemetery only to realize that there are more tragic deaths to come his family’s way.

 

6.  The Best of Enemies
Based on ‘The Best of Enemies: Race and Redemption in the New South’ by Osha Gray Davidson
Release Date: April 5, 2019

This film is based on a true story of two individuals with conflicting beliefs. In 1971, a court-ordered school desegregation decree brings together outspoken civil rights activist Ann Atwater, and local Ku Klux Klan leader C.P. Ellis to co-chair a two-week community meeting to deal with the issue. Little did they know that the relationship brewing between them will change both of their lives.

 

7.  Artemis Fowl
Based on ‘Artemis Fowl’ by Eoin Colfer
Release Date: August 9, 2019

A criminal genius at the age of 12, Artemis Fowl II captures an underground fairy to get information about his missing father, leading him to a battle against the fairies who are most likely behind his dad’s disappearance. Disney’s adaptation of the book casts Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonnell, Tamara Smart, Nonso Anozie, Hong Chau, Josh Gad, Judi Dench.

 

8.  It: Chapter 2
Based on ‘It’ by Stephen King
Release Date: September 6, 2019

Those familiar with the book already knew that the It movie released in 2017 was just half of the story. After almost 27 years, the Losers’ Club, now all successful adults, return to Derry once again to put an end to their demonic clown nemesis, Pennywise. The adult counterparts of the protagonists will be played by Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, James McAvoy, Bill Skarsgård and more.

 

9.  The Goldfinch
Based on ‘The Goldfinch’ by Donna Tartt
Release Date: October 11, 2019

Teenager Theo Decker survives a terrorist attack in a museum but lost his mother in the blast. During the incident, the shocked survivor steals the infamous Dutch painting “The Goldfinch.” The painting became the last link to his mother, but as time flies it starts to turn Theo’s life upside-down.

 

10.  The Good Liar
Based on ‘The Good Liar’ by Nicholas Searle
Release Date: November 15, 2019

Starring Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen, ‘The Good Liar’ tells the story of Roy who successfully deceives a rich widow he met online. However, as he enters her life, Roy will find himself caring more and more for the woman he only intended to take money from.
 

11.  Little Women

Based on ‘Little Women’ by Louisa May Alcott
Release Date: December 25, 2019

A soon-to-be Christmas flick, the classic novel adaptation features the March sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy, in their passage from childhood to womanhood during the Civil War. Director Greta Gerwig brings together famous actors which include Meryl Streep, Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet and, Emma Watson.

 

12.  All the Bright Places
Based on ‘All the Bright Places’ by Jennifer Niven
Release Date: TBA

An unlikely pair meets on the ledge of the school’s bell tower: Theodore Finch who is fascinated with death and killing himself, and Violet who awaits her graduation only to leave her past behind. As the two pairs up for a school project to discover the “natural wonders” of their state, they will both discover that they can actually live their lives as it happens. But things are not meant to stay as it is.
