Seven narrative films, two documentaries, and thirteen foreign films – here are just some of the films you can expect from Cinema One Originals 2017! And for its 13th year, the festival promises a lineup that's bold and out of the box, especially with this year's theme: "Walang Takot."
The festival will be running from November 13 to 21 at TriNoma, Glorietta, UP Cine Adarna, Cinema 76, and Cinematheque Centre Manila, with an extended run at the Power Plant Mall from November 22 to 28. C1 Originals opens with Martin McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and closes with Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris' Battle of the Sexes.
The upcoming long weekend calls for a movie marathon, so better start marking your calendars because we're giving you a rundown of all the films you must see in this year's C1 Originals!
NARRATIVE FILMS
1. Si Chedeng At Si Apple
Directed by: Fatrick Tabada and Rae Red
From the writers of Patay Na Si Hesus and Birdshot comes Si Chedeng At Si Apple, a dark comedy revolving around Chedeng and Apple- two elderly women who set off on an adventure to find Chedeng's ex-girlfriend, all while carrying a Louis Vuitton bag with a severed head inside. It stars Gloria Diaz and Elizabeth Oropesa.
2. Nay
Directed by: Kip Oebanda
Nay tells the story of Martin, a sheltered boy who is turned into an aswang by his yaya, Nay Luisa, to save him from dying. He then learns how to hunt and prey on the poor and the weak. The film stars Enchong Dee, Sylvia Sanchez, and Jameson Blake.
3. Paki (Please Care)
Directed by: Giancarlo Abrahan
Dexter Doria stars in her first lead role as Alejandra in Giancarlo Abrahan's Paki. Alejandra, after 50 years of marriage to her husband, wants to separate from him and live her life as an old maid. She decides to visit her children and ask for their blessing, but they only try to stop her from doing so. Joining Doria in the film are Shamaine Buencamino, Eula Valdez, Noel Trinidad, Ricky Davao, Ina Feleo, and more.
4. Nervous Translation
Directed by: Shireen Seno
A nice but shy eight year-old Yael sees a Japanese TV commercial of a pen that can translate and help express the thoughts of nervous people like her. Instantly hooked by this pen, she becomes obsessed on getting her hands on it. This family drama stars Jana Agoncillo and Sid Lucero.
5. Throwback Today
Directed by: Joseph Teoxon
In Throwback Today, Carlo Aquino portrays Primo, a guy who regrets some of his past decisions. After encountering a glitch from his old desktop computer, he was able to chat with his college self, having the chance to rewrite his story. This sci-fi film also stars Annicka Dolonius, Kat Galang, Empress Schuck, and Allan Paule.
6. Changing Partners
Directed by: Dan Villegas
Dan Villegas' newest film is adapted from the Palanca Award-winning stage musical by Vincent De Jesus. It tells the story of a May-December couple and the struggles they face because of the huge age gap. The film will also be exploring the answer when the genders of the characters are reversed. The film stars Agot Isidro, Anna Luna, Jojit Lorenzo, and Sandino Martin.
7. Historiographika Errata
Directed by: Richard Somes
Historiographika Errata is a 4-part film which presents a different take on the country's history. Here, you'll find a suicidal Jose Rizal, a cross-dressing Andres Bonifacio, a Macario Sakay protégé, and a comfort woman who turned out to be the first Makapili. This stars Joem Bascon, Alex Medina, Nathalie Hart, and Maxine Eigenmann.
DOCUMENTARY FILMS
1. Bundok Banahaw: Sacred and Profane (For the Benefit of the Doubt)
Directed by: Dempster Samarista
This documentary studies and explores Mt. Banahaw, as well as the people, culture, and practices there. It also aims to discover the truths behind the magic that surrounds the place.
2. Haunted: A Last Visit to the Red House
Directed: Phyllis Grande
Haunted puts the spotlight on the Red House in Bulacan. It explores about the two kinds of horrors that surrounds the house – from the ghost stories that people tell about it to the horrors that the Filipinas of Pampanga faced after being raped there during the Japanese occupation.
