Seven Reasons Why ‘Blade Runner 2049’ is the Sequel We Deserve to See

The highly anticipated sequel to the cult sci-fi favorite film from 1982 is finally hitting the big screen this week. The 30 year wait is over, and here's why you should dive deep into the future world of blade runners on the hunt for replicants.

The highly anticipated sequel to the cult sci-fi favorite film from 1982 is finally hitting the big screen this week. Blade Runner 2049 returns us to the dystopian, cyberpunk future where humans and androids coexist – but it is far from being a peaceful situation. It is thirty years after the events of Blade Runner and blade runner Rick Deckard is in hiding. Replicants, androids that look exactly like humans but with a limited-lifespan, still exist. A new blade runner is out on the hunt for replicants, and he soon discovers a secret that threatens the existence of humanity.

Sci-fi fans are beyond excited that the 30-year wait is over, and they have all the reasons to be. Here are seven reasons why you too should dive deep into the universe of blade runner in the year 2049:

1. The first film, Blade Runner (1982), had several versions with different cuts and endings, all of which are equally intriguing.

Set in the year 2019, the 1982 neo-noir science fiction revolves around Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a so-called "Blade Runner" who is assigned to retire replicants – androids who look like real human beings. While he tracks down these androids, he meets Rachel, a replicant who can evoke human emotions. Becoming closer to the leader of the replicants, Deckard begins to question his identity, of what is and what is not human.

Because of the changes made by studio executives, seven different versions of the film was released. This includes the Workprint Prototype Version released in 1982, the Director's Cut released in 1992, and finally, the Final Cut, a digitally-restored version which was released in celebration of the film's 25th anniversary.

2. The 30-year gap between the two films made the Blade Runner universe grow into more awesome things.

The special effects used in Blade Runner is lauded as one of the best of all time, using the materials and technology available then to bring the futuristic world in Philip K. Dick's book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep come to life! It's made in 1982, sure, but upon seeing the film, one would just admire how Blade Runner attempted to create the world sans the advancements in technology today and succeeded at it.

Things can only get better, 35 years later. With the upgrades in everything filmmaking – from set and costume design to the SFX department – those who fell in love with Blade Runner should be excited as to what Blade Runner 2049 will be bringing them!

3. Important people behind the scenes make a comeback: the original film's director and writer return for the sequel.

Two of the most important people from the first film are returning to make sure the new film lives up to the Blade Runner's hype and legacy! Ridley Scott, the director of the original film, comes back as executive producer while Hampton Fancher pens the script to 2049

Denis Villeneuve, who's the mind behind critically-acclaimed films like Incedies, Prisoners, Sicario, and Arrival, will be helming Blade Runner 2049. With all the acclaim he's been getting in his previous films, we could only expect the best from him!

4. Rick Deckard is back, and his iconic character is still portrayed by Harrison Ford.

In the original Blade Runner, we are introduced to Rick Deckard who is an obedient specialist undercover with the Los Angeles Police Department whose primary job is to retire a group of replicants that have returned to Earth to extend their death dates. Before the film ends we see Deckard leave with Rachel, a replicant who he falls in love with. Where they’re off to or what happens to them in the last 30 years, we have yet to find out in the sequel!

5. Joining Harrison Ford in the sequel is an impressive lineup of formidable Hollywood actors

If you think that the return of Harrison Ford is enough, he is joined by equally great actors in the sequel: Ryan Gosling who is a Golden Globe winner plays Officer K, Robin Wright who is known for her character in Netflix's House of Cards plays Lieutenant Joshi who is Officer K's boss, Dave Bautista a.k.a. Batista who is a semi-retired professional wrestler plays Sapper Morton, Mackenzie Davis who is known for his character in the San Junipero episode of Black Mirror and Jared Leto who is a singer-turned-actor and best known as DCEU's Joker plays antagonist Niander Wallace.

6. Blade Runner 2049 is just about to open in cinemas, but we're already treated to multiple prequels to immerse into the universe.

The original Blade Runner was released in 1982 and took place in 2019 and now, they've released a new film which takes place in 2049 — 30 years from the last one. But what happened in the years between 2019 and 2049? Luckily, there are few prequels on YouTube which director Denis Villenueve commissioned in the hopes of clearing up a few mysteries to the world we're about to be reintroduced to.

These shorts were slowly released in August to promote the release of Blade Runner 2049. The first one created by Luke Scott (son Ridley Scott) is 2036: Nexus Dawn focuses on Niander Wallace where he introduces his new line of replicants; the second short, 2048: Nowhere to Run, is set just a year before the new movie and follows Sapper who is selling organic substances just like the people who sold snakes in the original; and the last, Black Out 2022, being an anime film is created by legendary anime director Shinichiro Watanabe and tells the story of what happened with the Replicants after the events of the first film.

7. The earliest reviews of the sequel are in, and they are all excitingly good.

With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 96% so far, Blade Runner 2049 is quickly becoming one of the best films to come out this year – all the more reason why everyone needs to see it! Some declare it as something that's "so thoroughly transportive, you won't want to return to the real world", while some even went as far as declare it to be "better than the original" film. And that's saying something!

One needs to see it to believe it, right?

It's time to flash forward into the future and experience Blade Runner 2049. Blade Runner 2049 opens in Philippine cinemas and IMAX on Friday, October 6, 2017.
