In case you missed it during this year's Cinemalaya, now's the time to catch Treb Montreras II' hip-hop film Respeto as it's showing in more than 30 cinemas nationwide starting today!
See the trailer here:
Montreras' debut film centers Hendrix (Abra) – an aspiring rapper from a crime and poverty-stricken area in Manila – who meets a grumpy old bookshop owner Doc (Dido Dela Paz) – an activist poet who is still haunted by his experiences during the time of Martial Law.
It stars Abra and Dido Dela Paz, joined by Loonie, Chai Fonacier, Kate Alejandrino, Ybes Bagadiong, Brian Arda, Thea Yrastorza, and Nor Domingo.
Respeto bagged the major awards in this year's Cinemalaya Film Festival, including Best Film, Best Sound, Best Sound, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, and Audience Choice, as well as the Best Supporting Actor award for Dido Dela Paz.
The film was also given the NETPAC Jury Prize for "tackling the complex issue of human rights violation across two generations, musically connected by the vibrant and socially-conscious use of language".
Released just in time for the commemoration of the beginning of Martial Law, this film is something that needs to be seen as it reflects the scars and the horrors that this country experienced and continues to experience even until today.
