Five Things Every Fitness Newbie Should Know Before Hitting the Gym

The fitness journey from beginners to fanatics can seem intimidating, but this list will make sure your every sweat will lead you to successful workouts.

We're nearing the halfway mark of 2019, and let's keep it real here: we probably haven't been following our own list of resolutions as well as we want to, like being more active and fit. We hear you — sometimes just the comfort of the couch when binge-watching or giving in to junk food cravings are far more convenient activities than (finally) hitting the gym.

Saying you want to start out on your fitness journey is the easiest part, and actually doing it and finally using that gym membership isn't. However, it's never too late, and you owe it to yourself to commit to being fit. Don't know how to jumpstart your active gym life? Fret not, newbies, as we give you a rundown of 5 of the most important things you should know before getting started!

1. Create a plan and make it a habit.

Congratulations! After putting it off for so long, you've finally decided to start on your own fitness journey! Now what?

The first thing to do is to jot down the specific things you want to achieve. Do you want to lose or maintain your weight? Do you want to be strong or gain some muscle? Are you preparing for another event which requires you to be fit or to be fitter than you already are, like an upcoming hiking trip with your barkada?

Once you've figured out the answer to your whys, you can then start making a plan of the things you'll need to do on a regular basis. Make sure it's something you can commit to for a certain period of time, so you'll be able to achieve whatever goal you have!

2. Meet a personal trainer.

When starting out on your fitness journey, it's also best if you meet with a personal trainer or a gym instructor who will make sure that all the exercises you're doing are both correct and safe. The trainer will also be monitoring your progress all throughout so he or she can determine if it's already time for you to move on to more advanced and more intensive exercises. Your personal trainer will also be your cheerleader and motivation especially when workouts get challenging. Remember that what doesn't challenge you, doesn't change you!

3. Slow and steady wins the race!

Since you consider yourself a gym newbie, don't instantly amp up your energy to keep up with more advanced members — it's not recommended that you jump into the more rigorous exercises to keep yourself safe and injury free. Gym instructors always advise to start small and to start slow. Once your system has adjusted to your new routine, you can then start going to the gym more frequently in the week, and doing more intensive exercises as you go on.

4. Ask for guidance

For the first-timers, everything inside the gym can be overwhelming. You would either get the feeling of wanting to try any and all sorts of equipment, or just skipping everything altogether because you are confused with all the possible kinds of exercises and don't know what to do anyway. In times like these,
don't be shy to ask the staff in the gym questions, so you get to know how certain equipment or exercises can affect and help you achieve your goals. It's also important that you understand these things before actually trying it to lessen the risk of not only doing it wrong but also getting injured in the process.

5. Fuel your body with the right kind of food and drink.

Working up a sweat will definitely make you hungry–and thirsty! It's only right that you eat and drink right to reward yourself for all the effort you've put into your fitness goals. Aside from eating a well-balanced meal, proper hydration is an essential tool to help your body recover all that's been lost during your workouts.

When hydrating yourself before, during, and after working out,  water is usually not enough. Your output during exercise produces tons of sweat, so you will need to replace all that your body loses with the optimum hydration that G Active provides.
