Dyson globally announced its second formulations haircare range, the Dyson Omega™ nourishing range. Combining 13 years of agricultural expertise with 12 years of hair science research, Dyson engineers looked to natural ingredients to solve the problem of dry hair. Powered by a unique blend of seven omega-rich oils, including sunflower oil harvested from Dyson’s own farms in Lincolnshire, UK, the range comprises of a hydrating hair oil which boosts and restores hair, and a leave-in conditioning spray which nourishes and detangles. These deliver instant and long-lasting nourishment for all hair types.

From Farm to Formulations

12 years ago, Dyson invested in research and understanding the science of hair. We discovered ways in which our technology could radically improve hair health. Leaps in innovation – such as our motor, heater, and airflow technology – allowed us to revolutionise haircare and achieve step-changes in performance. 

Meanwhile, in an entirely different field, we have spent over a decade experimenting and investing in precision farming. We have focused on growing the best, tastiest and most nutritious produce, farmed sustainably and efficiently, while protecting the environment and encouraging biodiversity. It’s a passion and in the process I became very interested in how the farms could add to the development of ingredient-led beauty products which aid hair health.

Dyson Farming was established in 2012 and is Britain’s largest farming business, with 36,000 acres of working land – that’s about the size of 20,000 football fields. Dyson Farming is a top five producer^[1] of wheat grains, malting barley, oil seeds, and potatoes in the UK, as well as sunflowers for the Dyson Omega™ range. The farm’s nine-hectare sunflower field is home to over 800,000 sunflowers, some growing as tall as 6 feet.

Sunflowers weren’t chosen for their looks, but for their unique chemistry: sunflower oil is rich in essential fatty acids, particularly omegas 6 and 9, which help to deeply moisturise the hair, smooth the cuticle, and reduce frizz. Thanks to its lightweight molecular structure, the oil absorbs quickly into the hair shaft without accumulating build-up.

The Dyson Farming team implemented a number of strategies to ensure the harvested seeds contain an optimal balance of beneficial compounds, from trialling over 60 varieties of sunflower to identify those richest in natural ceramides, to conducting regular soil testing, micronutrient balancing and crop walks once the seeds were planted.

3. Contains seven omega-rich oils, including Dyson Farming sunflower oil. 
4. Enriched with antioxidants and carefully selected ingredients for protection against UV and heat damage, while reducing breakage. 
5. Infused with Panthenol to strengthen hair. 
6. Lightweight spray mechanism designed for even, controlled coverage on wet and dry hair.

How to use: Spray onto wet or dry hair and distribute evenly using hands, a brush or a comb. 

A Sensory Experience: Scent and Form

Dyson is committed to designing products that not only deliver efficacious results but are also joyful to use. The Dyson Omega™ nourishing range carries a carefully crafted fragrance composed of eight distinctive notes. Fruity top notes of sparkling citrus, green tea and bergamot create an instantly fresh, clean scent that reflects the formulation’s lightweight finish. Floral mid notes of jasmine and rose offer a comforting, sophisticated aroma as the product settles in. Once dried down, deeper notes of musk, cedarwood and oak moss emerge, leaving a soft and versatile final scent that mirrors the scent of the Dyson Chitosan™ range.

Distinct from conventional liquid sprays, the Dyson Omega™ leave-in conditioning spray starts as a thicker gel-like cream in the bottle, transforming into a lightweight mist when dispensed. To achieve this, Dyson engineers designed a bespoke bottle with a custom spray mechanism, ensuring the product distributes quickly and evenly, covering any length of hair in one easy step.

Meanwhile, the Dyson Omega™ hydrating hair oil packaging is sculpted from glass, showing the oil’s rich natural colour. After trialling 112 different glass bottles, Dyson engineers opted for a weighty, sturdy design that increases stability to prevent accidental spills. The custom cap further increases stability by offering a firm grip that won’t slip out of your hands, even when slick with oil.
