Being a night owl (I work late into the evenings because I have writer mood swings), I always miss the bus when it comes to breakfast meals. The only time I attempt to pull myself out of bed before nine in the morning is when I am at a hotel serving complimentary breakfast—I was never one to miss out on the bacon-and-eggs kind of thing. Here in the Philippines, hotels are practically the only place where we can indulge in bountiful A-grade bacon due to the lack of restaurants that serve special breakfast meals here.
Thank goodness for Ellen Evangelista-Co and Early Bird Breakfast Club.
Serving beautiful breakfast, every day
“There were so many good breakfast places in Singapore,” remarks Evangelista-Co. “I never had a shortage of breakfast food there because they had restaurants that would serve breakfast beyond the seven-to-ten margin. When I came back here to the Philippines, I realized that I didn’t have much to choose from. This is what led me to put up a restaurant that serves all-day beautiful, delicious breakfasts.”
A look inside
Early Bird Breakfast Club is a sight for sore, breakfast-loving eyes. They made use of soothing yet attractive colors to highlight their interiors. The turquoise-and-white wall mural alone has already become very popular with their growing band of customers. “People take photos of themselves against the wall and make it their profile picture,” Evangelista-Co shares with a laugh.
Every single item on the menu looks tempting and mouth-watering based on description alone. But as they are still starting out, Evangelista-Co was more than eager to have us try out some of her best-selling dishes. To start with, we had the extremely delicious (cue favorite alert!) Chorizo and Mushroom Risotto (P465), which is basically Spanish chorizo mixed with fresh mushroom risotto and Parmigiano Reggiano. I can see this becoming a staple favourite among present and future Early Bird clientele because it is the epitome of comfort breakfast food—creamy, rich and positively sinful. It is, indeed, a dish you can kiss your diet goodbye for.

The Early Bird Croque Madame (P445) is probably one of the most beautifully plated sandwiches in existence. It’s something you might hesitate to touch at first because presentation-wise, it really is a lovely sight. This is Early Bird Breakfast Club’s version of a classic French sandwich with bacon (finally!), cheese and mustard filling smothered in the most delicious mormay sauce.

They also offer the most high-class class Champorado I ever laid my eyes on. Based on its appearance and ingredients, Early Bird Breakfast Club proudly calls this the Yin and Yang Champorado (P275). With this, you get to have not one, but two kinds of chocolate—Belgian dark and white—in your Champorado. This goes very well with the crunchy dilis served at its side.

Of course, we don’t talk about breakfast without talking about the classic French toast. Early Bird Breakfast Club offers a variant of this, with one of their best-selling ones being the Peanut Butter and Caramel French Toast (P260). Normally, I am wary of both ingredients (unless they come with salt to counter the sweetness), but I fell head over heels in love with this dish. Lovely chocolate dusting on the plate aside, it is not too sweet, and the peanut butter and caramel, in this case, go together really well.

The restaurant has its share of specialty drinks, too. Staff and management recommend the Ginger Peach Lemonade (P125) and the Vitamin C Smoothie (P165), which is an excellent drink to jumpstart your day.

Early Bird Breakfast Club has become a comfort haven for expats and foreigners who dearly miss the delicious breakfasts that are staples in their native countries. At the same time, it is also popular with Filipinos who jog around the Fort area in the morning or wish to eat something after a fun night in one of the bars. Most importantly, the restaurant is now home to people who just want to indulge in the joys of having good breakfast food. Thanks to Early Bird Breakfast Club, bacon—and other delicious breakfast staples—is just that much more accessible.
