‘Sumsum’ Brings Authentic Middle Eastern Dessert ‘Halva’ to Manila

Discovered centuries ago, sesame is believed to be a condiment served only to gods and royalties. It's been used as a spice and even as a wine popular for its aroma and flavor, until it finally evolved into the sweet confection that's known today as Halva.

Halva came from the Arabic word "Halwa", which means candy, and is a sweet version of the Middle Eastern Tahini. The dish used to be a simple one made from oil, flour, and sugar, but over time it became a sweet treat that's mixed with pistachios, almonds, coconuts, and dates, making it well-loved by anyone who wants a delicious sweet snack, minus the guilt.

For those who are looking for a place where they could try out this Middle Eastern favorite, look no further than Sumsum, which has recently opened at One Bonifacio High Street

Established in Amsterdam in 2017, Sumsum literally means "sesame" and serves different flavors of halva that are inspired by different people and cultures that share the same love for this sweet treat. Eventually, the place started to offer other products like cured tea, dates honey, energy bars, and cookies, which a lot of people have grown to love through time.

The store currently has 7 flavors, but they are planning to bring 12 of the 50 flavors they have in the coming weeks.

The sweet treat is priced per 100g and depending on the flavor. Their Pistachio, Dark Choco, Cocoa, and Coffee flavors are priced at P329, while Triple Choco, Pecans and White Choco, and Berries are priced at P379. Take note that a minimum order should be 300g or a slice that's as thick as one finger, which will cost you around P900 to P1,000.

The price may seem hefty for some, but a slice of halva is good enough to last you for days (or a whole year, even, if you're going to be storing it correctly). Perfect to pair with a cup of coffee or tea, halva is vegan-friendly and gluten-friendly, and is packed with calcium, iron, vitamins, and amino acids, making it a healthy sweet treat for everyone!
