Salcedo Community Market has been around since 2005 and has helped a number of merchants in the food industry. You can find different kinds of dishes from the Philippines and around the world which makes it a lot more exciting. We decided to visit this community market one weekend and we were glad we did. Make sure you're equally hungry as we were when you visit, though, because we're sure you'll want to devour everything. Here are a few food finds which caught our attention at the Salcedo Community Market you just can't miss when you visit:
Belinyas
Their only mission is to share their Portuguese egg tart dessert, Pastel de Nata (P50/piece; P280/box of 6), with the rest of the world. Besides the egg tarts, they also sell Pastel de Queijo or mini cheese tarts at P65/piece or P370 for a box of six. The flaky filo pastry complements well with the rich custard filling, you'll be able to finish one whole box in one sitting!
Authentic House of Curry
Known for their lobster and scallop balls which are sold by the piece, you'll easily be drawn to this stall because of the aroma it emanates from the spices they use. They also serve other Indonesian favorites like Chicken Curry, Beef Rendang, Fish Curry and more.
Bicol's Best
No need to travel south just to enjoy classic Bicolano favorites cooked in gata and sili. You can find specialties like Ginataang Langka, Laing, Bicol Express and so much more.
Budbud
Specializing in a familiar Filipino favorite, suman, that's made from glutinous rice cooked in coconut milk, often wrapped in banana leaves. However, Budbud has taken suman to the next level by creating different flavors – Ube, Ube Langka , Ube Buko, Mangga, Saging, Champoradowo – you can indulge in, for a change.
Bersi Gyro Shawarma
Prepared by the owner herself, Ging Salapantan only uses prime beef cuts and the finest ingredients for her mouth-watering shawarma. Choose between classic favorites like Beef Shawarma, Beef Kabab, All Beef or Vegetarian Falafel that's within your budget. Insider tip: don't miss out on the cheese!
Ribs Manila
We were surprised as to how tender these slabs are, you won't need a knife to cut through it. Their ribs are smoked overnight then grilled right in front of you. One order can be shared especially if you plan on ordering from other stalls. A solo meal is served with rice and elote or corn on the cob with condiments that's a popular street food in Mexico. You can also order half a slab for P480 or a full slab at P880.
Z's
This stall serving sausages has been at the weekend market for years now and has already gained a following. Choose from Original, Spicy, Cheezy, Hot & Cheezy or Hungarian – all served on warm Ciabatta which they heat on the griddle.
Saikoro Steak
You don't have to go to an Izakaya just to indulge on some Saikoro Steak as it is easily made available at the community market. A skewer of cubes of tenderloin is quickly pan fried on high flame until medium rare and is lightly brushed with Ponzu sauce as it sizzles on the griddle. They happily dust the cubes of meat with chili powder for a kick with every bite.
Hachibi
This stall named after a Naruto character serves Takoyaki (P50/4pcs; P100/8pcs) which is a ball-shaped Japanese snack made of flour-based batter and cooked in a specially molded pan. It is stuffed with diced octopus and other high-quality ingredients. Now you can't get any more authentic than this!
Sorbetes
Simple as it is, sorbetes or dirty ice cream is a classic Filipino favorite and it's such a delight there's one sold in the middle of everything at the market. We were lucky it's Avocado season so we had to get scoops of it. Usual flavors are cheese, mango and chocolate.
