An Italian Feast at Parmigiano

Despite being far from the pizza and pasta capital of the world, Filipinos have somehow developed a great liking for these dishes. On those occasions that we take a break from our rice meals, we crave for some cheese-laden pasta or pizza (at least, I do). With the abundance of Italian places in the metro, it’s no trouble at all to satisfy such cravings, but it’s always good to try something new.



There’s a new Italian place on the block, which kids and adults alike will enjoy—it’s called Parmigiano Pizzeria Ristorante. During one Sunday lunch out with my whole family, we decided to satisfy our Italian food cravings and headed to Parmigiano inside Resorts World Manila. It is a nice casual place that is spacious as well—enough to accommodate our big group of 12 people. The elegant simplicity of this restaurant is what enticed us to try it out. It has a nice feel to it. The décor is surprisingly chic and comfortable at the same time. Even if we were all dressed casually, we felt at ease with the simple yet stylish interiors.



The focal point is the counter at the end of the restaurant, where you can see a prominent display of Manny O wines, and where you can get a glimpse of what looks like a brick oven.

The classic favorites were all present in Parmigiano’s menu. There’s a good selection of pasta, pizza, risotto and other main courses. As an appetizer, we ordered a big plate of Fruittura Di Calamari (P395), which is deep-fried breaded baby squid that is served with marinara sauce and aioli dip. While waiting for our orders, we were given some complimentary bread to whet our appetite. The bread was served with two dips—one is a mixture of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, while the other is like an Italian version of a salsa (minced tomatoes, bell pepper, Parmesan cheese and olive oil).

Our orders arrived one-by-one. My sister got her Minestrone soup (P170), a classic vegetable soup with beans and pancetta. It looked somewhat oily but it was delicious enough that my sister’s nine-year-old son finished the whole bowl. Surprisingly, the main courses arrived before the appetizer did but we didn’t mind since they gave us a free refill of the bread. We got the Tre Salsiccia (P395) pizza for sharing. It is a meat-lover’s delight that combines pepperoni, sausage, and prosciutto cotto. The delicious combination of the savory meats was complemented with the thin, chewy crust of the pizza.

My individual order was Risotto Ala Parmigiana (P275), which was a hefty serving or perfectly cooked Arborio rice with Parmigianno Reggiano cheese, plus Parmesan shavings on top. Its velvety texture gave a nice feel to my palate, but unfortunately, it was not a stand-alone dish. Good thing my sister ordered the Pollo Arrosto con Patate (P435)—roasted chicken with oven-roasted potatoes. It tasted authentically Italian, and went really well with my risotto. The rosemary stood out in the well-seasoned and tender chicken. The roasted potato chunks were very satisfying, too.

I like eating out with my whole family because I get to sample different dishes. My older sister right next to me ordered the Branzino Ala Griglia (P795)—a dish with seared Chilean seabass with white wine cream sauce. It was served on top of a bed of risotto and with a siding of green salad. The fish tasted just fine but I thought it was a bit pricey though.

I was also able to get a little nibble of my niece’s creamy spaghetti carbonara, which is a hit with any youngster. The Vongole, or spaghetti with clams, is also a must-try, while the chicken pesto pasta was light but flavorsome. I was happy that I was able to taste my mom’s Lasagne (P295), which seemed big enough to share. The gooey melted cheese on top of the dish looked really appetizing, and the inside was really good as well. It was smooth, creamy and simply delicious. It had the right mixture of Bolognese sauce and the cream sauce. And although it was a bit runny when we tried to scoop out the lasagne with a spoon, I would say that this is the best tasting pasta dish among all the rest.

With our plates empty and our bellies full, we left this Italian restaurant feeling very full and content. I wonder where our next family food adventure will be?
