The Sandugo Festival commemorates the blood compact ('sandugo') between Datu Sikatuna, a chieftain of Bohol, and Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi on March 16, 1565. This event is considered the first international treaty of friendship between Filipinos and Spaniards. The festival was first held in 1989.
The festival celebrates the values of friendship, diplomacy, and hospitality. It is a month-long celebration that includes a street dancing competition where participants re-enact the historic blood compact. The festival also coincides with the founding anniversary of the province of Bohol.
