The Pahiyas Festival dates back to the 15th century, even before the Spanish colonization. Farmers would offer their harvest at the foot of Mount Banahaw as a sign of gratitude. With the arrival of Spanish missionaries, this practice was integrated with the feast of San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers. Initially, harvests were brought to the church for blessing, but as the harvests grew, it became a tradition to decorate the facades of their homes instead.
Pahiyas is one of the most colorful harvest festivals in the Philippines. The main feature is the elaborate decoration of houses with fruits, vegetables, and the famous 'kiping,' which are colorful leaf-shaped rice wafers. It is a vibrant display of creativity and a thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest.
