The Moriones Festival is a folk-religious festival that originated in the town of Mogpog in the 1880s, started by Father Dionisio Santiago. It re-enacts the story of Longinus, the Roman centurion who was blind in one eye and pierced Jesus' side. When Jesus' blood touched his blind eye, his sight was restored, leading to his conversion to Christianity.
The festival is characterized by the 'Moriones,' men and women in masks and costumes portraying Roman soldiers. They roam the streets of Marinduque for the entire week, engaging in mock sword fights and other antics. The festival culminates on Easter Sunday with the dramatic re-enactment of the beheading of Longinus.
