A recurring religious, pilgrimage celebration held in Manila, Metro Manila.
The statue of the Black Nazarene was carved by an anonymous Mexican artist from dark wood in the 16th century and was brought to the Philippines in 1606. It was enshrined in the Church of San Juan Bautista in Bagumbayan (now part of Rizal Park) and later moved to the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo.
This is one of the most attended religious gatherings in the Philippines, drawing millions of devotees. The main event is the 'Traslacion,' a procession of the image from the Quirino Grandstand back to the Quiapo Church. Devotees believe that the image is miraculous and that touching it or its carriage can bring healing and blessings.
