About the Event

The exhibit explores the same questions we all have: how do we not sense an impending disaster? Or do we resort to adapting to the ever-changing earth? As a continuation of this conversation, John Paul “Japs” Antido examines these through his current body of work: “Mula sa Bagyo ng Galak at Pighati” (“From the Storm of Joy and Sorrow”), on view at Galerie Joaquin Podium from September 25 to October 7.

From the science behind it to the impact it has on humanity, natural disasters are his source of fascination. The artist shares that no matter how destructive these reminders can be, the survivors eventually heal and move forward. Antido’s works hope to inspire his viewers to embrace the perfect balance that is nature, even if it presents itself initially in a tumultuous disarray we call natural disasters.

Antido explains, “Filipinos are always visited by tropical storms and natural calamities, maybe sometimes not the actual disasters but in a way through literal and allegorical typhoons of hardships and struggles in life. But we are optimistic people”, he says. “Always ready with beacons of hope and positivity. ‘Rainbows after the rain’, as the old folks say. Even during these cold and disastrous times, people continue to exhibit hope and eagerness for the dark clouds to pass and the floods to subside. Together, people adapt to the situations they are given and conform to the conditions they experience. Also, they glorify the simple acts of survival and improve themselves by doing so.”>
