About the Event

Darwin Guevarra has gone full throttle into his obsessions – machinery melds with tarnished objects. The familiar neighborhood machine monstrosities, mechanics spilling into everyday life, and the obsessive use of mixed media to create three-dimensional canvases are often found in the art coming out of his oeuvre.

Urban Study

There’s an unbearable detail to the works: they hum with layers, intricacies and an apocalyptic, doom-laden fearfulness of something that we just can’t pinpoint. It’s partly futurist, as the objects are subsumed by machine; but it’s also a fear of decay and what that might mean when wrought with metal. Guevarra seems to suggest that, unlike the natural world that fades, dies and is replenished; metal just decays and our possessions, as we connect them even closer with the mechanical, might go the same way too.

With roots from the urban municipality of Taytay, in the province of Rizal, Philippines, Darwin Guevarra, is brimming over with interesting stories to tell, or paint, if you prefer. Guevarra’s passion revolves around visual arts, sculpture, painting and photography, and performing arts. Remarkably most of his skills being self-taught.

He has participated in various exhibitions, both locally and internationally, and is a committed member of GuhitPinoy, UAE, Group Artists of Taytay and the Art Association of the Philippines. He won 2nd prize in Mixed Media Category of the Red Bull UAE Art of the Can Competition in November 2006 and the Sony World Photography, France in April 2008. Guevarra also became the first Filipino artist to bring home the grand prize for fine arts in the Dubai Ladies Club Shaikha Manal New Signatures Young Artist Award in 2008.

Guevarra’s “Urban Antiquities” will be showcased along with “Galerie Joaquin: The Best Of” show -- works by National Artist Federico Aguilar Alcuaz, National Artist Abdulmari Imao, Presidential Medal of Merit Awardee Juvenal Sanso, Angelito Antonio, Michael Cacnio, Norberto Carating, Nelson Castillo, Eduardo Castrillo, Rudolf Gonzalez, Raul Isidro, Carlo Magno, Ram Mallari, Mario Parial, Dominic Rubio, Ephraim Samson, Ombok Villamor, and Lydia Velasco will be on view at the New Wing of Power Plant Mall in Makati City from September 18 to 30, 2018, with the Artist Reception slated for Wednesday, September 19, at 6 PM.
