About the Event

The New Voice Company (NVC), one of the country’s most cutting edge and socially provocative theatre groups headed by its Artistic Director Monique Wilson, celebrates the 20th Anniversary of VDAY with a V20 English and Filipino production of THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES (TVM) by Eve Ensler with Filipino translation by Rito Asilo.

VDAY is a movement to raise awareness about violence against women issues, using the play as a catalyst to raise funds for women’s groups. The V20 two day run will be held on Saturday, August 11 (English) at 8pm and Sunday, August 12 (Filipino) at 3pm at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza in Makati City.

THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES is precisely what its name suggests – a series of stories, based on interviews, in which women talk about the most secret part of their bodies. But it’s a great deal more. The play shows so triumphantly that by opening up such a subject, you can also reveal a whole range of human experience. Using intelligence, integrity and comparison, Eve Ensler has created not just one of the best shows in the world today but the most morally serious.

In THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES, Eve Ensler has given voice to a chorus of lusty, outrageous, poignant, brave, highly original and thoroughly human stories. The play brazenly explores the humor, power, pain, wisdom, outrage, mystery and excitement hidden in vaginas. The New Voice Company production of THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES is the most widely attended and long running play in The Philippines.

This special V20 production highlights an exciting trio of actresses. Leading the cast is veteran internationally celebrated actress Monique Wilson – one of the show’s original actresses, New Voice Company Founder and Artistic Director and Global Director of One Billion Rising (www.onebillionrising.org).

Joining Monique is one of the Philippines’s most exciting, versatile and applauded actresses – Missy Maramara. Missy recently received rave reviews for her lead solo role in Dulaang UP’s production – “Ang Dalagita’y ‘sang Bagay na Di-buo” (Dalagita), and has been a long time New Voice Company TVM actress. She is one of the country’s most promising actresses and a talent to watch out for.

Rounding up the trio is lauded brave and creative actress Mae Paner (Juana Change), who aside from being a critically acclaimed satirist, is also a talented actress. Mae will not be extolling satire this time, but will be showcasing her diverse acting skill. She recently impressed audiences with her one woman show on extra judicial killings - “Tao Po” which will be going on an international tour later this year.

The show is directed by TVM /VDAY actress and former UK One Billion Rising Coordinator - Thea Tadiar. Thea is a singer, actress, teacher, and women’s rights activist. NVC Executive Producer Rossana Abueva, behind NVC productions of ‘TVM’, VDAY Benefit Performances, ‘Aspects of Love’, ‘Into the Woods’, ‘Falsettos’ and ‘Cabaret’, to name a few, is the Producer of the V20 run. Rossana will also be producing V20 London Rising (for One Billion Rising and VDAY) at Cafe de Paris in London on September 26 featuring Tony Award winning playwright, performer and activist Eve Ensler and Monique Wilson amongst other artists.

THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES runs for one V20 special weekend only – on August 11 (English) and 12 (Filipino). The artists will be performing in English on August 11 at 8pm and in Filipino on August 12 at 3pm.
