About the Event
Los Angeles born and raised artist TOKiMONSTA (Jennifer Lee) is coming to Manila for the first time for a live set happening at XX XX in Chino Roces, Makati.
At the end of 2015, TOKiMONSTA was diagnosed with an extremely rare, potentially fatal brain disease called Moyamoya. Initially defeated but eventually regained her ability to comprehend music, she creates her latest album, Lune Rouge, consisting entirely of songs she wrote after her recovery. Though the lyrics don’t specifically address the oreal, the music is rooted with her struggles and how she overcame this challenge. With guests like Purp, MNDR, and Yuna, Lune Rouge is a more melancholy than her previous beatwork which includes bold and bright collaborations with the likes of Anderson Paak and Gavin Turek, but it also carries an undertone of hope, even exuberance. Sharp, clear instrumentals cut through airy vocals across 11 tracks that raise Lee’s music to new emotional heights.
TOKiMONSTA takes her name from "Toki," the Korean word for rabbit, and the hyperbolic hip-hop term "monsta." As a young girl, she was an unfocused pupil of classical piano but has come to use this background to create vast textural soundscapes through utilizing live instruments, percussion, digital manipulation, and dusty noise. With her musicality, she is able to make beats that are beastly enough in scope to compete with heavy-hitters like Flying Lotus and Daedelus.
Her music has been recognized and praised by the very best in avant-garde and mainstream media. Being featured in large scale radio programs such as: BBC Radio1, NPR, BBC World Service, J Wave (JP), Studio Brussels (BE), Radio Nova (FR), KCRW (USA) to name a few. Subsequently, she has been featured in DJ Mag, Pitchfork, XLR8R, URB, Paper, LA Times, SPIN, and is listed as the #1 female DJ in Los Angeles by LA Weekly, TOKiMONSTA has proven to be a force to be reckoned with.
Opening her live DJ set night in XX XX are local acts including Religion Black, Mama Sav and CRWN. Shortly after her set, the party will close with DJ Butta B. Co-presentors for this event include Purveyr, TKM, Element and San Miguel Pale Pilsen. Tickets are priced at PHP 800 for preselling and PHP 1,000 for door charge.
