About the Event

The Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI), the lead textile research and development arm of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), will hold the first TELA ASEAN Textile Conference this November— in partnership with DOST, ASEAN Foundation, and the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD).

TELA ASEAN Textile Conference

Centering on the theme, "Weaves of Change: Fostering Ties that Bind", experts from the textile industry and textile research institutes will discuss the latest state of the ASEAN region's textile industries—particularly in the field of handloom weaving and natural dyes; and exchange insights concerning the best practices and textile innovations from the Philippines to its neighbors in Southeast Asia.

For two and a half years, PTRI has hosted TELA Conference bannering the message of Textiles Empowering Lives Anew.

With this year's event coinciding with the 50th founding anniversary of both the Philippine Textile Research Institute and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, TELA ASEAN Textile Conference counts as an important and timely dialogue in today's climate.

Delegates from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam will be participating, with about 200 stakeholders and industry key persons expected to attend.

Apart from discussions on developments in textile research and technology, strengthening the ASEAN handloom weaving industries, and promotion of the use of sustainable natural textile materials and natural dyes will also be tackled, in a bid to achieve sustainable economic growth and mitigate the industry's environmental impact—as the region adapts to the growing demands of globalization.

The conference also aims to address cross-cutting issues, such as economic empowerment of marginalized sectors; support to Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs); promotion of cultures; and scientific interventions to promote regional products.

An exhibit and mini trade fair featuring textiles from each participating nation will also be open to the public.
