About the Event

The University of the Philippines College of Music invites the public to a lecture titled "Dangerous Mediations: Pop Music in a Philippine Prison" by visiting professor Dr. Aine Mangaoang on Wednesday, 24 May 2017, 5:00-6:30PM at the Rey T Paguio Hall (Annex 232), UP College of Music. The lecture is about Michael Jackson's renowned hit "Thriller" that the 1,500 inmates at the Cebu Provincial Rehabilitation and Detention Centre (CPDRC) had interpreted in a viral video in 2007.

Drawing from a critical musicological approach, Dr. Mangaoang will elaborate on how audiovisual digital platforms such as YouTube play an important role in shaping collective experiences and will argue for a more nuanced understanding of music's power and affect in places of detention. Dr. Mangaoang's lecture is culled from her recently published book (Bloomsbury Academic, New York).

Dr. Mangaoang currently teaches musicology at the Department of Musicology, University of Oslo. She finished her PhD from the University of Liverpool.

The lecture is absolutely positively free and open to the public.
