About the Event

As its 34th season, “Ginugunita Kata,” draws to a close, Ateneo ENterteynment para sa TAo, Bayan, LAnsangan, at DiyOs (ENTABLADO) presents the play “Ang Dapat Nating Hindiang Pagbabalik ng mga Arturo Uy” translated by Jerome D. Ignacio and Patricia Isabel G. Lucido from the popular “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui” by Bertolt Brecht. As it draws parallel to the rise of Hitler and the fascism of the Nazi era, the play is set to end the organization’s season advocacy of “together recollecting the past through a symphatetic portrayal of the present.”

SUMMARY:
The City of Kingpin, where various political, economic and social groups interplay in each one’s desire to take hold of power, is at an all-time low. Members of the Cauliflower Trust – an elite group of citizens and corporations, in particular, have started to feel the recent economic disasters that threaten to remove their influence and strip them off their wealth. Besides the economic depression, criminality has gone rampant in the city, particularly that of corruption and murder. The group considers enlisting the help of the most famous gangster in the city, Arturo Uy, as they know him and his posse to bring immediate results. They choose, however, to ask Asusena, as he is a very powerful politician who is deeply indebted to the Cauliflower Trust. Asusena consequently establishes the “Partido Progresista” and gathers influence to protect the interests of the Cauliflower Trust.

Meanwhile, Arturo Uy and his gang are frustrated by the posse’s standstill position, as their status as big-time gangsters in the city is threatened by the rise of the “Partido Progresista.” The gang then seeks opportunities to get ahold of power once more, and they find an opening through Bolo, who reveals the entirety of the corruption that the “Partido Progresista” and the Cauliflower Trust are involved in. Uy visits Asusena to supposedly offer him protection from crime in exchange for his own protection, but the latter wholly declines. This prompts Uy and the gangsters to take matters to their own hands and use violence to ascend to power.

Their efforts, together with the death of Seung and Bolo, the exposure of the corruption between the Cauliflower Trust and Asusena, and a great warehouse fire, eventually help the gang discredit the “Partido Progresista” and amass enough influence to become the sole group in control of the city. He uses all means to secure the impending power available, even by way of force and blackmail. Uy and the gangsters successfully turn the chaos around to their advantage, as they manage to strip the government of its power and establish their own fascist policies. The gang feels, however, that the capture of Kingpin City is insufficient. They later on sets they eyes on Capishe City, and further on conquering others that can secure their authority and establish Arturo Uy’s ideological legacy.
