About the Event

The University of the Philippines College of Music, through a grant from the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) cordially invites the public to the preview of a video documentary on traditional Pawalan music titled "Sound Tenderness: Music of the Non-violent Palawanun People in Southern Philippines" on Thursday, 23rd of February 2017 at 6pm. Admission is free.

The second episode of the series "Resilient Music at the Margins," the video documentary is directed by musicologist Dr. Jose S. Buenconsejo and tackles an important issue on the relationship between music making and culture, particularly how music gives sense to non-violence that is a remarkable characteristic of Palawan society in Southern Philippines. Marked by tenderness, Palawan instrumental music--save the boisterous gong and drum sounds in celebratory dance and, in former days, rice wine drinking song--re-inforces group conformity to elders and leaders, By contemplating on the meaning of Palawan music, one therefore appreciates the role of music in constantly reproducing an outlook in life where social cooperation and conformity are highly valued.

The documentary was filmed in Minahaw, Bonobono, Bataraza, Palawan in 12-16 August 2016.
