About the Event

The National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA), the country’s premier musical competitions for promising young musicians, is introducing the youth symphonic band category this year to encourage more of the country’s youth to hone their musical talents.

Renato Lucas, NAMCYA Secretary General, said this new category in the competitions will also expand the musical horizon of NAMCYA, which has, for some years, only included a number of categories.

“We have a lot of excellent symphonic bands in the country,” said Lucas. “We want to give them the chance to demonstrate to us this excellence in NAMCYA, in a spirit of friendly competition, and receive the recognition that they deserve.”

Aside from the Youth Symphonic Band category, the other categories include Junior Piano, Junior Strings, Senior Guitar, and Solo Rondalla Instrument for the solo categories, and Youth Choir (Mixed and Equal Voices), Rondalla Ensemble, and Traditional Music Ensemble for the group categories.

“We are very excited to present the best young talents that we have culled from our nationwide eliminations. Since admission to the competitions and the concert of winners is free, we invite everyone to watch and experience the music of our youth,” said Lucas, who, years ago, was a winner of NAMCYA himself for cello.

The theme of NAMCYA this year is Tubog sa Tunog: Ang Kabataan sa Nagbabagong Panahon . For 43 years, NAMCYA has been developing young musical artists while nurturing and preserving Philippine musical traditions through its annual competitions.

Among the prominent winners of NAMCYA are pianists Raul Sunico and Jaime Bolipata, violinists Julian Quirit and Joey Corpus, tenor Noel Velasco, sopranos Andion Fernandez and Wilardena Misenas, cellist Ramon Bolipata, and flautist Antonio Maigue, to name a few.

The 2016 NAMCYA National Final Competition will be held from November 22-27, 2016.  All events are free and open to the public. For the CCP Venues, control tickets shall be distributed one hour before each event.
