About the Event

Until May 7, in the heart of Ayala Triangle, Manila booklovers will have the opportunity to enjoy free books and several activities related to the pleasure of reading, as the pop-up library The Book Stop, in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes, is programming a series of reading-related events.

Designed and built by WTA Architecture & Design Studio, The Book Stop is a non-profit library where visitors can interact in discussions with fellow readers and share their love of literature, borrow volumes for free and exchange books. The Book Stop was inaugurated last April 23, during the Día del Libro organized by Instituto Cervantes. Its goal is to highlight the relevance of libraries and the passion for reading in society.

In order to attain it, the organizers have prepared a line-up of free activities. On May 4, at 5 pm, in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes, there will be a discussion on translation and the reception of European literature into the Philippine Literary scene. On May 5, at 7pm, The Book Stop welcomes the public to join the Open Mic Poetry Night. Hosted by poet Erica Laraya, the night will have a number of invited poets, spoken word artists and other performers that are willing to share their talent.

The following day, May 6, at 5pm, The Book Stop will invite book lovers to the talk “What Am I Doing Here? A Talk on Travel writing, featuring Filipina author Alice Sun-Cua. A Manila-based doctor and a writer, Sun-Cua has published two travel books, "Riding Towards the Sunrise," which won the National Book Award for Travel in 2000; and "Autumn in Madrid and Other Travel Tales" (UST Publishing House, 2013), which chronicles her journeys in Spain. Sun-Cua does not intend their travel books to be travelogues or guidebooks, but as a contemplative account of her travel experiences. She writes like a pilgrim-poet who openly ruminates on the varied implications of travelling, from the quotidian to the more philosophical.

On May 7, The Book Stop will be having a “Blind Date with a Book”, wherein people are invited to share their book, covered in wrapping paper with the keywords of what the work is about and have it exchanged with a book of their interest that is also covered.

The Book Stop project is made possible thanks to the collaboration with CNC Construction & Development, Filtra Timber, Omni Electrical & Lighting, Shelter Architecture & Design Magazine. The Literary Program of The Book Stop is done in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes and National Book Development Board.

Admission to The Book Stop is FREE on a FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED basis. For more information on the program, please visit Facebook Page.
