The UP College of Music presents its women faculty in two forthcoming events at the Abelardo Hall Auditorium.
The first entitled KATHAin! Musikang Galaw is scheduled on Tuesday, March 5, 6:30 pm, showcasing new, collaborative music and dance creations by the Department of Composition and the Dance program of the Department of Voice, Music Theatre and Dance. The second is scheduled on Friday, March 8, 6:30 pm.
Dr. Christine Muyco, Chair of the Department of Composition, directs the MusikangGalaw concert. This is a contemporary concert of and about sound and kinesthetic gestures in constant interplay. Dance majors of the college will interpret works by Elena Laniog, the resident choreographer of UP Dance Company, whose creations will be phased to the music of “prepared music” composition and improvised music. The concert revolves the idea of “creation” within “moments” of sounding and moving. Angel Baguilat, faculty in the UP Dance program, assists in organizing the show.
Dubbed “The Road Home,” the concert on March 8 features Dr. Beverly Shangkuan-Cheng directing a performance of the well-loved Fauré Requiem. A work suffused with human tenderness, it is based on the text of the Roman Catholic Mass for the Dead. The piece will be sung by the mixed UP Chorus Classes and the Dawani Women’s Choir who will appear for the first time in Abelardo Hall. Soprano Stefanie Quintin and baritone Lawrence Jatayna will perform the solos. Dr. Beverly Shangkuan-Cheng is First Prize winner of the prestigious American Choral Directors Association Graduate Conducting Competition in the USA. She received the degrees Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from the University of Michigan and Master of Music from Yale University. Dr. Shangkuan-Cheng is currently Assistant Professor of the College.
Admission ticket to the Musikang Galaw concert is Php 150.00, while the Fauré Requiemconcert is Php 200. Students with valid IDs get 50% discount, while senior citizens, 20%.
