Weekender Guide: August 16, 17, and 18, 2019

Still don't know where to go for the weekend? Here are the events and places to check out in the coming days.

Rak of Aegis
until September 29 (PETA Theater)

The iconic, Filipino musical phenomenon, Philippine Educational Theater Association’s Rak of Aegis makes a much-awaited return from July-September 2019 at the PETA Theater Center in partnership with Organisasyon ng mga Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM) and The PhilPop MusicFest Foundation (Philpop).

Since the show opened in 2014, Rak of Aegis has taken Manila, figuratively and literally, by storm! The original Pinoy musical brought one of the greatest OPM icons, The Aegis Band, to the spotlight by featuring their powerful hits and karaoke favorites “Halik,” “Sinta,” “Basang Basa sa Ulan,” and more.

Rak of Aegis was also one of the first Filipino productions which ushered in the trend of jukebox musicals, giving birth to a newfound appreciation for theater and original Pinoy music that crosses all boundaries of social class and age. Today, Rak of Aegis is the longest-running original Pinoy musical in contemporary Philippine theater.

Mabining Mandirigma: A Steampunk Musical
August 16, 17, 18, and 31 (Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino)

Tanghalang Pilipino's season offering is the acclaimed and multi – awarded Mabining Mandirigma a steampunk musical from Dr. Nicanor Tiongson’s narrative entitled “Mabining Mandirigma (The Gentle Warrior)”.

It is a steampunk musical foregrounding the intellectual heroism of Apolinario Mabini, who in the second phase of Philippine revolution, displayed an uncommon vision, a warrior’s spirit, and a principled revolution, as he struggled against all odds to enjoin his countrymen to go beyond considerations of class, clan, economic gain, and personal ambition, so they could think and act as citizens of one nation.

Steampunk is incorporated in the production to make it appeal to contemporary audiences. It repurposes the expressions of the Victorian era and engages them with the current. “The production repurposes the politics and aesthetics of turn of the century the Philippines and engages it with current notions and issues”, says director Chris Millado.

August 15 to 31 (The Doreen Blackbox, Arete, Ateneo De Manila University)

Tanghalang Ateneo, the longest-running theater company of the Loyola Schools of the Ateneo de Manila University, will kick off its 41st season, "Écriture Féminine | Sulat-Babae: The Women's Season," this August with a full-length version of Peter Zaragoza Mayshle’s Dolorosa.

Set in three periods of Philippine history, Dolorosa tells the story of a family whose devotion arms the women to face the tides of historical change. During the Spanish occupation, a wooden statue of the Mater Dolorosa, crafted by a master sculptor from Paete, Laguna, is mysteriously lost. In the Japanese era, Pilar, the sculptor’s granddaughter, discovers her powers of astral projection and is visited in an apparition by the Sorrowful Mother, tasking her to search for the missing statue.

The show will go onstage at the Doreen Black Box (Areté, Ateneo de Manila University) from August 15 to August 31, 2019, from Thursday to Saturday. Thursday and Friday shows will be at 7:30PM, while Saturday shows will be at 2:30PM and 7:30PM.
