Noli Me Tangere, The Opera
June 21 to 23 (Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo, Cultural Center of the Philippines)

Known as the country's first full-length opera, Noli Me Tangere, The Opera is based on Jose Rizal's classic 1887 novel of the same name, adapted to become a three-act opera by National Artists Guillermo Tolentino (libretto in Tagalog) and Felipe Padilla De Leon (music) in 1957.

The opera follows Juan Crisostomo Ibarra, a young Filipino who returns home to the Philippines from Europe to open up a school and marry Maria Clara, his betrothed. His plans, though, are hindered by his family's archenemy, Padre Damaso. Noli Me Tangere also tells the timeless story of love, betrayal, and hope, as well as the "social cancer" that can be seen in the ways of the church and the system of governance during that era.

Shop and Help Trunk Sale: A Fund Raising Sale For Frederick Peralta
June 16 and 23 (The Hub, Marriott Hotel Manila)

Frederick is hailed as a fashion luminary who has inspired the next generations of Filipino designers to dream big, after his work gained recognition abroad, including the winning the grand prize in the 1994 Internacionale des Jeunes Creatures de Mode in Paris, France with his intricately beaded gown which was aptly called “The Pearl of the Orient”.

Friends are now rallying together to help support his treatments through fundraisers featuring his works. The Marriott organized “ Shop and Help” a trunk sale from June 17-23 that features several of his creations ranging from an assortment of sleek and colourful evening gowns, to well-crafted and distinctive gentlemen’s suits, and wedding dresses that are captivating confections in white.

This is the second time that Marriott Manila is hosting the fund-raising trunk show for Frederick Peralta. “The same month last year, Federico: An Exhibit and Trunk Show Sale was organized here at Marriott. I am so thankful that the hotel that I work with is very supportive, providing the venue for this trunk sale is such a great help,” says Michelle Garcia, Cluster Director of Marketing Communications for Marriott Hotels.

Ang Pagsalubong Sa Apatnapu
June 15 and 16; 22 and 23; 29 and 30 (Tahanan ni Juan, Marikina)

Kicking off its 12th Theatre Season HABI, Teatro ni Juan’s highly commended original musical Ang Pagsalubong Sa Apatnapu returns this June on a limited run.

Coming off as “a musical that breaks free from the limits of its space”, Apatnapu rerun features new cast members and a reworked second act. The musical is a tribute to Marikina’s remarkable contribution to the Philippines’ historical narrative — the arrival of Jewish refugees (Manilaners) in the valley and their intercultural nexus with the Marikeños. Together, they are forced to contend with the Japanese Imperial Army.

Featuring the Teatro ni Juan ensemble, Ang Pagsalubong sa Apatnapu is a musical that is worth telling the generations to come. Here is your chance to witness, as what critics laud, “sheer energy and exhilarating raw sweaty dedication of a true community theatre.”

ANG PAGSALUBONG SA APATNAPU runs on June 15-16, 22-23, 29-30, July 6-7, and July 13-14 (Saturdays & Sundays, 7pm) at Tahanan ni Juan, 43-A C. Cruz St., Sta. Elena, Marikina City. Tickets are available at PHP150php. Seats are limited.

For tickets and inquiries, you may contact Je Vincent Trinidad (+63915 495 4438) or Paola Neyra (+63956-132-0995) or email contact.teatronijuan@gmail.com.
