An Evening of French Opera with Mezzo Soprano Krissan Manikan-Tan
About the Event
Cultural Arts Events Organizer in partnership with Manila Pianos Artist Series present Mezzo - Soprano Krissan Manikan - Tan in a soirée of French opera arias and duets of the Belle Époque - a nostalgic term for what seemed a simpler time of optimism, elegance and progress after the first World War.
The beautiful era in Europe c1890 to 1914 was when France and its European neighbours were at peace, when art and design flourished and music became accessible to a wider audience than ever before.
Paris in the Belle Époque saw the construction of the Eiffel Tower, the Paris Métro, the beginning of the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur on Montmartre, and the completion of the Paris Opera.
While mezzo-sopranos, (female voice type who generally have a heavier, darker tone than sopranos) typically sing secondary roles in operas, many 19th-century French-language operas give the leading female role to mezzos, like Didon in Les Troyens, Charlotte in Werther, Dalila in Samson et Dalila, and Carmen.
