CCP Shows and Events This January: Ternocon 2020 and More!

Make 2020's entrance to your life more worthwhile by exposing yourself more to theater plays, films, music, and other meaningful art forms. Wondering where to get your dose of these shows? The Cultural Center of The Philippines has it all! To help you out, here's our monthly round-up of the shows and events at the CCP for January 2020:
 

1. CCP Arthouse Cinema in January: New Year, New Struggles
Date: January 17 to 31
Venue: Tanghalang Manuel Conde

Welcoming the year 2020 is CCP Arthouse Cinema's screening of films that emphasize important social, political, and cultural events that contributed in shaping the nation. The film screenings include: Kakabakaba Ka Ba? by Mike De Leon on January 17 and Magic Temple by Peque Gallaga on January 31, while the Pelicoolab: Gawad Alternatibo Specials will commemorate the Mendiola Massace and peasant struggle through the screenings of Mendiola Massacre by Lito Tiongson (1987), Dung-aw by Mario A. Guzman (1990), Fragments by Lito Tiongson (1991), Bukid, Gulod, Libis by Brian Delvo (2018), and Pagkatapos ng Tigkiwiri by Danielle Madrid (2018) on January 24. Reflexive Cinema which celebrates the centennial anniversary of Philippine cinema will also be screening Ang Pagbalik by Maria S. Ranillo (2019).
 

2. 37th PPO Concert Season: "Gold: Classical Music Treasures"
Date: January 24, 8PM (Concert Series V)

The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra welcomes 2020 with Antonin Dvorak's Serenade for String Orchestra, op.22, E Major, and Cesar Franck's Symphony in D
minor. Soloist Adolfo Mendoza will also take the center stage with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Bassoon Concerto, B-flat Major. Conducting is PPO Music Director Maestro Yoshikazu Fukumura.
 

3. Ternocon 2020
Date: January 26
Venue: Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater)

The country's emerging designers will once again gather to showcase their innovations on the Filipino terno. Co-produced with Bench, the unique competition put the budding designers in a workshop which engaged them with the history, technique, and construction of the said formal dress. Come January 26, 2020, the final competition night will take place on a grand fashion concert to be held at the CCP Main Theater. For more information, check out the Ternocon website.
 

4. University Theater Season at the CCP
Date: January 28 to February 2
Venue: Tanghalang Huseng Batute (Studio Theater)
Tickets: TBA

Different productions from select university-based theater groups will be staged at the CCP during this year's university theater season. The featured works will include original Filipino works, classic adaptations, and experimental work from Dulaang UP, Tanghalang Ateneo, DLSU College of St. Benilde, and regional colleges and universities. The productions will also ramp up to the 13th International University Theater Association's (IUTA) Congress and Festival to be held in August. more details, contact the CCP box office at 832-3704.
 

5. Gaetano Donizetti's "Lucia Di Lammermoor"
Date: January 31 (Gala night), February 2 (Matinee)
Venue: Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater)
Tickets: P1,000 to P5,000 (Gala night); P500 to P2,500 (Matinee)

International Filipino tenor Arthur Espiritu leads an ensemble of cast from both Italy and Manila in the local staging of the great opera by Gaetanno Donizetti, Lucia Di Lammermoor which was based on Sir Walter Scott's historical novel The Bride of Lammermoor. Lead by Arthur Espiritu as Sir Edgardo di Ravenswood, the cast also includes Korean Baritone Byeong-In Park as Lord Enrico Ashton, Lord of Lammermoor; Melody Louledjian, Soprano Coloratura as Lucia di Lammermoor; and Shi Zong, bass as Raimondo Bidebent, a Calvinist chaplain. Maestro Alessandro Palumbo is conductor with Vincenzo Grisostomi Travaglini as director and Prince Sisowath Ravivaddhana Monipong as assistant director.
