Non-Techie’s Guide to iPhone 6

Can't understand all the tech terms surrounding the iPhone 6 release? Here's a guide to all the new features in layman's terms.

After much anticipation and product leaks all over the Internet, Apple has finally unveiled its latest flagship smartphone. As speculated, the bigger iPhone comes in two sizes: iPhone 6 in 4.7 inches, and iPhone 6 Plus in 5.5 inches.

Here are 5 things you need to know about the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus:

  1. Biggest iPhones yet

Both the iPhone 6 (4.7-inch screen at 6.9 mm) and iPhone 6 Plus (5.5-inch screen at 7.1mm) are the biggest and thinnest iPhones to date.

  1. New design

iPhone 6 bids farewell to rough and squared-off edges and embraces smooth curves all around the device. Its seamless edges make it closely resemblant to the iPod Touch 5th generation.

  1. Improved camera

The new iPhone will take better photos and videos thanks to its improved 8MP iSight camera now with 1.5-micron pixels and f/2.2 aperture. Users can expect to take photos faster and brighter. Other noteworthy features of the camera are:

  • Improved sensor with Focus Pixels that lets you take clearer photos twice as fast as its predecessors.
  • Exposure control
  • New burst mode (10 photos per second) and timer mode (3 – 10 seconds)
  • Time-lapse video
  • Shoot stunning 1080p HD videos at 60 frames per second (fps)
  • Shoot slo-mo videos at 120 or 240 fps

  1. Fastest and most energy-efficient iPhone yet

iPhone 6 (and 6 Plus) will have the all-new A8 chip along with its M8 coprocessor. But instead of babbling on about its technical specs, which I'm sure many of us don't really understand full well, here's what having the A8 chip means in layman's term: the new iPhone will perform faster than its predecessors. Even when you're running graphic-intensive apps, the iPhone will still perform without any hiccups. The A8 chip is also 50% more energy-efficient than the A7 chip so it means longer battery life.

  1. Release date

The new iPhones will be available starting September 19 in the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan. No release date has been specified for the rest of the world yet.
