Summer time for kids means no school, but that does not mean the learning has to stop. Use the summer break to bring out their artistic talents, help them get started on their dream to be their own boss someday, work out their excess energy or just try something they’ve never tried before. Here is a quick guide to navigate through the myriad of summer workshops available for children.

For kids who like working with their hands and have an artistic inclination:



Fashion Arts and Crafts at School of Fashion and the Arts (SoFA)

Kids from 6-12 years old will learn jewelry making, tie-dying or making and designing their own hair accessories in this hip and trendy take on an old favorite --this is arts and crafts that young trendsetters and budding fashions designers are sure to adore.

Make Believe Theatre Arts

Albert Einstein once defined genius as a matter of imagination rather than knowledge. Make Believe Productions, a theatre and arts company will hold various performing and visual arts workshops ranging from Basic animation, basic film directing, digital photography, Camp Rock singing and song writing, and street dancing for children and young adults to unleash their creativity.

In TGIF Kids in Stripes, kids will take a tour of the kitchen, train as a server and host and even learn how to sing “Happy Birthday” to a guest with Friday’s signature bravado and panache. Primary skills for young entrepreneurs who want to get into the restaurant business.

The Power Book Camp will immerse participants in the joy and excitement of being surrounded by books and running a bookstore. By “employing” them as a Powerbooks staff member, they will be oriented on the ins and outs of the book business.

Workshop is open to children between the ages of 10-16.

Kids Ahoy

Even children can be introduced to the basic business principles and the rewards of entrepreneurship.

With the Junior Entrepreneur program of Kids Ahoy, kids create a product from scratch (usually from recycled materials), calculate the cost of materials, then proceed to marketing and selling their creation. Their teacher guides them on profit assessment and so they develop the value of managing money and the importance of saving and budgeting.

The profit earned by the class is donated to charities for kids.

Ideal for kids between the ages of 6 - 10.

Option to enroll on a per session basis - P 450; for the entire summer (12 sessions, 1.5 hours) - P4,500.

Lego Robotics Workshop

Build, program and run your own robots using LEGO Mindstorms NXT sets, the latest educational tool used by top US schools. Program your own robot design and teach it to respond to light or motion, navigate through a maze and even challenge another robot. This workshop offers three levels: MECHANIC (beginner), NXT ENGINEER (intermediate) and NXT ATHLETE (advanced). Students need to accomplish beginner session before going up the next level.

Kids, age 8 to 16 who join the workshop must bring their own laptop (strictly 1 student: 1 laptop) with the following system specifications:
