Good Ole Rock 'n' Roll from The Bloomfields

by Irene Tan-Gurango; Photos by Ian Ong, Jay Lara and Cathy Paras

You'd be hard-pressed to find any other band in the local industry today that can wow a crowd of all ages like The Bloomfields does. Garbed in their infamous 60's coats and ties with those oh-so-tight pants that, according to the boys "the ladies love," these young, fun-loving lads play their good ole rock 'n' roll with energy and so much passion that they can make crowds made up of people from four year-olds to senior citizens get up and dance!

Playing classics from legendary rock 'n' roll acts like The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Ritchie Valens, Jerry Lee Lewis, and everything fun from the 60's, The Bloomfields throws us a few decades back with their music and their pumped-up performances every single time. As cliché as it sounds, The Bloomfields does feel like a time machine at times as watching them really takes you back to the good ole days of pure rock 'n' roll. Amazing for a group of young boys who were born waaaaay past that era, if you think about it! The Bloomfields is made up of JayJay Lozano (guitar/synth/harmonica), Rocky Collado (drums), Louie Poco (bass), Lakan Hila (keyboards/synth) and Pepe Lozano (guitar).

The Bloomfields is really just a bunch of young boys who stumbled upon this kind of music, fell in love with it and stuck with it. What actually started as an alternative, punk or even shoegaze band is now what we lovingly know as The Bloomfields! And we're all absolutely thankful. It's hard to believe just how much charisma and talent these boys have, almost rivaling that of The Beatles, if I may say so! With their Beatlesque auras, almost boy band-like charismas, fun-loving attitude, vocal harmonies, nostalgic 60s dance moves, stage splits, and crazy instrumental solos, who can resist The Bloomfields?

Clickthecity hangs out with the boys as they talk about their upcoming debut album under EMI Records, their newest single, Wala Nang Iba, playing on radio stations right now and their latest video playing on MYX, as well as the more important stuff like their signature suits and their proudly Marikina-made shoes, dream gigs, groupies, and pre-gig rituals.

Here are a few soundbites from the CTC interview with The Bloomfields. Watch the entire interview and exclusive CTC performance here.

On their signature suits.
Rocky: We have four different types of suites and two of each. So that makes eight sets of suits…I think…we lost count.
Louie: The gray suit, the blue suit, the black suit…and the vest…and the beach attire…so that's five.
Rocky: So there you go…about 10!

On their upcoming album.
Rocky: The debut album is turning out well. We got to do stuff we wanted to do. We're really excited about the launch. We really don't know what's gonna happen. It's really exciting.
It's a self titled album with 17 tracks. Because the 60's songs are really short.
Louie: So there are 5 original songs and 12 covers.

On weird groupie experiences.
Rocky: No panties being thrown at us unfortunately. We're bracing ourselves for that though. Bracing for male underwear. Nothing too crazy yet.
Louie: Actually I have one…people call me Rocky. I have fans, but they call me Rocky.
Rocky: People think he's Rocky. There was this one woman who came up to us, sabi nya "Rocky ang galling-galing mo!" tapos hinalikan nya si Louie.
Louie: It's either Rocky or Duncan from South Border.

On their shoes
Rocky: These are Filipino made.
Jay Jay: From Marikina
Rocky: It would be weird if we wore rubber shoes in these tight pants. It actually helps us not to look stupid. Because if we wore anything else with the pants (…). The girls like the tight pants. If the girls like 'em we like 'em.

On their pre-gig rituals
Jay Jay: Before the gig we do vocalizations. And uh…we eat, right?
Rocky: Ya, we eat a lot! We eat after the gig, because we get really hungry..before and after the gig. We're pretty hungry now actually.
