A Familiar Plan
posted on Friday, November 09, 2007 in Movie Reviews
The Game Plan is perfectly fine for what it is: fluff. It’s another overly sweet, middle-of-the-road, family Disney picture, and there isn’t really anything wrong with that. Just don’t expect anything particularly new or exciting. Joe Kingman is an egotistical, Elvis-obsessed star quarterback for the Boston rebels. One day, a little girl shows up at his door, claiming to be his daughter. So now, the big, tough guy has to take care of the kid and deal with things like ballet and bedazzlers. It’s a formula that hasn’t really been fresh since Kindergarten Cop, but it gets the job done.
The script gets pretty cutesy at points, and it may be a struggle for some moviegoers to get through all the sweet stuff. Especially since the movie is actually pretty long. The film seems to just hobble along, trying to stuff every sweet and cutesy moment it can before it reaches its inevitable conclusion. A little trimming would’ve been appreciated.
What ultimately makes this film watchable is Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson. The former wrestler just brings so much charm to his role, and he really makes you laugh along with him, even when the jokes aren’t all that funny. And when it comes to the dramatic parts, the Rock brings it, as well. The Rock can act, folks, and it’s really nice to see his growth as an actor. Little Madison Pettis is adorable as the daughter, and her chemistry with the Rock can easily carry the audience through the film. It doesn’t make the film great or anything, but it does make it enjoyable at times.
There just isn’t a whole lot to say about this film. You probably already know what you’re getting into if you see it: run-of-the-mill family fluff. And that’s not really all that bad. It’s just not particularly good.
