Food And Fun At Bubba Gump
posted on Thursday, October 23, 2008
In the award-winning film Forrest Gump, Forrest meets his best friend Benjamin Buford 'Bubba' Blue at boot camp. Bubba's family knows everything about the 'shrimping' business, and Bubba endlessly talks about shrimp and the many ways of preparing it. After the Vietnam War, Forrest (with the help of Lieutenant Dan) sets up a shrimping business and names it Bubba Gump.

Barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sauté it; pan-fried, deep-fried, stir-fried -- Bubba sure knows his shrimp, and now we can enjoy a whole lot of them prepared in different delicious ways in a themed restaurant. Inspired by the film, Bubba Gump Shrimp Company offers a lot of shrimp dishes, seafood dishes, and some Southern-Cajun favorites in a fun, relaxed and casual atmosphere, ideal for family and friends.

Run, Forrest, Run!
Bubba Gump celebrates its anniversary this year, so Forrest Gump (through the affable talent of Steve Weber) packed his bags and headed to Manila to make special appearances to the delight of many Bubba Gump customers.
Forrest made a lot of people smile as he took time to meet and greet people, talking about the food he loves at Bubba Gump ("Shrimp, of course!"), and introducing the newest offerings of the restaurant. And even if I risked spoiling my appetite for lunch, I couldn't help but smile and say yes as Forrest opened his box of chocolates and charmingly offered me a piece.

After a lot of photo-ops and interviews, Forrest finds some time to rest; as for myself, I find some time to try out some of the new dishes in Bubba Gump. As I wait for the food to arrive, a tall glass of Speckled Lemonade (P125) tickled down my throat. An icy-cool, refreshing beverage made sweeter with strawberries.

To kick off my 'shrimping' extravaganza, I try out their appetizer, Dynamite Shrimp (P315). The Chinese-style shrimp poppers were adorably served dimsum-style, on a traditional bamboo steamer.

If you're wondering what an Asian dish is doing in Bubba Gump, let's recall the movie Forrest Gump and the main character's awesome ping-pong skills. His stint in China with an all-American ping-pong team is what inspired the sweet-spicy poppers. The shrimps are glazed generously with just enough hotness; I take in bites of the crunchy shredded cabbage that cushion the shrimps to tame down my palate.
A generous heaping of salad on a bowl was up next. The Grilled Shrimp Salad with Garlic-Cilantro Dressing (P400) has a huge serving perfect for sharing with a friend (or two, depending on your appetite).

The colorful mix of green Romaine lettuce, bright and bold marinated shrimp, fresh roasted red bell peppers, and a sprinkling of pine nuts were a delight to the eyes and to the stomach. The tender shrimps added to the texture of crunchy lettuce leaves in each bite. The dressing is garlicky enough, and with some wansuy (a personal favorite herb) in the mix, the salad alone can be your guilt-free main dish.

If you're looking for a hot number to treat yourself with, one dish from Bubba's Shrimp Specials will definitely give one that exciting tongue-wagging experience.
Spicy Jambalaya Pasta
The Spicy Jambalaya Pasta (P495) is a special number for Bubba Gump Philippines, as it was created by one of the cooks over at the Bubba Gump Greenbelt branch. They had proposed the dish to the big guys at the Bubba Gump homecourt, and they were happy to give it the greenlight.
Served with a slice of garlic bread, the al dente liguine is smothered with a spicy-hot Bourbon street tomato sauce. Giving the pasta more texture and color are slices of green bell peppers, chopped cilantro, onions, tomatoes and celery. Ample portions of shrimp are tossed about in the dish. What competed for my attention besides the shrimp are the slices of Andouille sausage - spicy, peppery, and salty, just a small slice along with some linguine gives it much flavor.
What I especially loved about all three dishes is that the shrimps themselves are already served naked, stripping off the extra time (and torture?) of having to de-shell these yummy crustacean treats one by one. Aside from so many shrimp dishes to choose from, Bubba Gump has something exciting in their new Fresh Catch Specials, an entirely new section in their menu that showcase scrumptious fish dishes prepared fresh, not frozen.

If Bubba were here today, I bet you he'd have a mighty good time trying out all the shrimp he can eat over at Bubba Gump, along with his best bud Forrest, of course. The new offerings of the restaurant is just proof positive that Bubba's right about the fruits of the sea - there's just so many ways we can have our shrimp, and a visit to a Bubba Gump near you can be the start of a great shrimping adventure.
