Peri Peri Grill House

Two weeks ago, I was invited to the launch of the overhauled Portuguese-style chicken house “Peri Peri” in Promenade, Greenhills. Now known as Peri Peri Grill House, the renovated resto presently sports a 'polished-casual' look but still is as comfy as the Peri Peri we've come to love over the years.

Brandishing an indeed more sleek and upscale look with its beige and dark brown themed interiors, minimalist furniture, and dim lighting, Peri Peri Grill House's ambiance is now a far cry from the fastfood-like one it had before. However, the place still lacks some points in the space department with limited seats and tables available. The restaurant can accommodate only a number of people so if you're planning to dine with a big group, I recommend you reserve ahead of time.

Aside from polishing their look, Peri Peri also added more items in their menu, providing more options for diners and making the cuisine more diverse.

Just last Sunday, my dad celebrated his birthday and since we were in Greenhills, I decided to treat him and the rest of the family to a Peri Peri Grill House dinner. I made them try a couple of my personal favorites among the items I was served during the Peri Peri launch: Crispy Taco Platter (P125), Herbed Shrimp Skewer (P315), Peri Peri Chicken (1 whole for P480), Baby Back Ribs (˝ slab for P470), and a serving of plain rice (P30) for each of us.
They loved not only the idea of eating somewhere new, but also eating dinner for free, so of course, they gratefully obliged. Because it was a spur of the moment treat and it was a Sunday night, I was worried that there won't be any tables available. Luckily a group left the moment we arrived at the resto, so there wasn't that much waiting. After placing our orders, the waitress politely asked if we can wait 15 minutes for the ribs and chicken. We had time to kill, so we agreed.
For appetizer, we had the Crispy Taco Platter. Menu claims it is addicting and if ever they're asked for a proof of an actual addict, I'd gladly volunteer. Tacos simply equate to my own definition of comfort food, and I absolutely love how Peri Peri's Crispy Taco Platter reminds me of my own taco recipe, which of course for me is perfect: crispy tacos neatly arranged on the platter, topped with cheese and with seasoned ground beef. Judging from the speed the platter was emptied (no more than 3 minutes!), it was easy to conclude that the Crispy Taco Platter got two thumbs up from the rest of the family as well.

The rest of the dishes almost simultaneously arrived. Even though it took a little over 15 minutes, we were more than eager to feast on them. I made them try next the Herbed Shrimp Skewers which my friend and I enjoyed very much during the launch. The succulence of the dish served to us was pretty consistent to how it was served during their launch. The Mediterranean flavor of the delectable and freshly-grilled shrimps was also able to entice the palates of my family, especially that of my seafood-lover dad.

Because Peri Peri specializes in their Portuguese chicken, dinner won't be complete without tasting the house specialty. I opted for the non-spicy variant since I have younger sisters who'd take a piece from it, though it is its spicier counterpart that I prefer more. Peri Peri chicken, especially this lemon variant, somewhat approximates to our local inasal. But what's unique about it is that even its white meat parts are very moist and tasty, something I don't often get elsewhere. In the other restaurants, I usually go for the dark meat but in Peri Peri, I can easily consume any chicken part may it be white or dark.

Even though we were in Peri Peri, the proud home of the unique spit-fire grilled Portuguese chicken, surprisingly, the Baby Back Ribs was the star that night. Yes, everyone loved the chicken fairly, but it was the Baby Back Ribs that everyone kept on raving about! Personally, I liked it better, too. For one, it was very tender. There was no hassle at all cutting it to pieces--hence, its fast dispersal. Secondly, the Texas barbecue marinade had a perfect blend: the sweetness slightly overpowering the spice, which is just how I like my ribs.

If I had a much bigger budget for this dinner treat, I would love for them to try Peri Peri's Shrimp Diablo (P335) in which bountiful breaded shrimps are tossed in a creamy mayo dressing then lightly spiced. This is another of my favored dishes among those I have tasted. However, I think the dish is not much of a 'diablo' since it wasn't much of a hot and spicy treat for me.

At the end of the meal, I knew everyone was satisfied. It was made evident by the way they were smiling and slouching back in their seats. For less than two thousand Pesos, I was able to throw a quality dinner treat for five. My family loved Peri Peri Grill House's moderate pricing yet ample enough serving. I won't be surprised that a week or two from now, we might again find ourselves feasting in this place.
