"Mom and Tina's will open in Makati soon."

This was told to me a month ago by my brother and Joey, our friend. Joey happens to be the son of Tina, one-half of the home-cooking comfort-food phenomenon, Mom & Tina's Bakery Cafe. Upon hearing this, I got so excited and said to myself, I must be there on their opening day.

Finally here!

This was simply marvelous news to my ears! My family and myself being long-time, loyal customers of the famous bakery cafe along C5, has spent countless lunches and dinners through the years at Mom & Tina's. I was instantly a fan of their food way back in high school when they only had a little stall with few tables and chairs, inconspicuous inside the FDRC building. It then evolved into a bigger and brighter place, much to our happiness - more space for more people to appreciate the comfort food goodness of the establishment.

Now, the famous bakery-cafe recently opened its Makati branch! I decided to hurry along the streets of Perea and dela Rosa, to get a whiff of the delicious scents and savor the flavors that I grew up with. I brought along Marian, my foodie friend who has never experienced Mom & Tina's, in hopes of converting her into a loyal fan.

That country-syle vibe that many have grown to love

Tuesday afternoon saw rainshowers and murky puddles along the streets of Makati, and the short walk from my office to the restaurant was made warm -- I knew my destination was going to be warm, cozy, and comforting, the way I've come to love the Mom & Tina's atmosphere.

It was absolutely heart-warming to see the place getting customer after customer, from passers-by to friends of the family, to loyal patrons and to newbies to the Mom & Tina's food. There was a point where it was filled to the brim, even their al-fresco area was packed! More and more people were lining up for take-out orders. Marian and I were the very first dine-in customers of their Makati branch, and we had fun observing how the place came to life during the lunch hour. We were amazed. I told Mia, the manager, how it was amusing to see people entering the place much earlier, even when their sign says 'Close'. I bet they were disregarding the sign and just zeroing-in on the welcoming sight of freshly baked breads and pastries by the counter. "Akala ko ba soft-opening lang today?", she chuckles. Along with their hardworking crew of attendants and waiters, she decides to open store earlier to greet the hungry Makati crowd.

From a little store to expanding into a bigger restaurant, Mom & Tina's has come a long way. Mia Cachola talks about their family-run restaurant, and opening its newest branch in Makati.

Since I was going to have lunch with someone who's going to try out Mom & Tina's for the first time, I decided to order for the both of us some of my favorites to share.

We started with a half order of Mango Kani Salad (P105 - half order, P200 - regular), a perennial favorite of my father, and then followed soon after by our main dishes, the Smoked Salmon and Capers Fettuccine (P180) and the Shepherd's Pie (P140).

The shepherd's pie is the very first item that I tried out in Mom & Tina's years back. It's actually what hooked me to the place - a warm, comforting pie of mashed potatoes and mixed in with ground meat, deliciously juicy with tomatoes and mushroom bits. Highly recommended!

Another crowd-pleaser is their Garlic Cheese Rolls, which comes in twos, along with soups, pastas and pie dishes. Grab these breads while they're hot, and sink your teeth into its soft and warm texture. It's addictive, these little marvelous rolls. Sprinkled with garlic, pepper, and blending its cheesy and buttery flavor, these bread rolls should not be skipped. No wonder people even order them for take-out!

And now, onto our dessert - we satisfied our sweet tooth with their Tortes!

Oh, these little frozen cups are simply delightful. I picked out the Mango Walnut Torte Cup (P80) and the Dark Toblerone Walnut Torte Cup (P90).

We waited excitedly for a few minutes until the cups have defrosted and softened. We dig in, and close our eyes to emphasize how delicious the flavors are. Mmmmmm. I was not at all surprised that Marian instantly became a fan of Mom & Tina's after our wonderful lunch experience.

Mom & Tina's finally opening in Makati is such great news for us -- just a walking distance from my office is a place where I can feel at home, with warm, comforting food which will always deliver smiles to customers. Especially on a cold and rainy day! See you all at their little corner, and oh, always leave room for their garlic cheese rolls.
