The PETA Pig
posted on Friday, February 16, 2007
PETA Asia Pacific is ringing in Chinese New Year by encouraging others to show pigs - highly intelligent animals - the kindness and respect they deserve. Members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia-Pacific, including an activist wearing a pig costume, handed-out vegetarian starter kits in Chinatown yesterday, just three days before the advent of the Year of the Fire Boar.
PETA’s point? The best thing that we can do for animals and our own health is to go vegetarian.
PETA points out that pigs are highly intelligent, sensitive, and - contrary to popular belief - clean animals who don’t deserve to be abused, slaughtered, or eaten. Pigs dream, enjoy listening to soothing music, and, when given the chance, establish complex social structures. Pigs have very long memories and sophisticated communication skills and have acted heroically to save the lives of other animals - including humans. Eating pigs is bad for people too. The consumption of pork and other meat and animal products has been linked to heart disease, strokes, diabetes, obesity, and several types of cancer.

“As the Year of Pig approaches, we’re calling on members of the community to make a positive difference in their lives—and the lives of millions of pigs—by adopting a healthy, humane vegetarian diet,” says PETA Asia-Pacific Director, Jason Baker.
