Camp Out At EDSA Shang!

Camp Out At EDSA Shang!

I fondly remember the first camp I attended as a kid. It wasn't in a jungle as I visualized and hoped it to be. Clad in our green and yellow uniform, my co-scouts and I stayed inside the school grounds for two days. During that camp, we bonded, played, and basically did all the things we could only dream about during a regular school day. Though the camp wasn't held in the mountains, or at least somewhere outdoors, the thought that for a day I'd stay in school, tend for myself, and roast marshmallows in an actual bonfire was already good enough for me.

Kung Hei Fat Choy!

This weekend spells out celebration for the Chinese and non-Chinese folk, as everyone welcomes the Year of the Earth Ox. For 2009, the Chinese New Year begins on Monday, January 26th. The ox is said to be patient, steadfast and hardworking, and these are good traits to imbibe in ourselves to usher in new beginnings.

LazerXtreme

LazerXtreme

A kid from the 90's who grew up in Manila would have spent an afternoon with friends in a game of laser tag. I fondly remember how Shangri-La Mall's Q-Zar and Megamall's Laser Quest were the hottest hang-outs for us 90s kids. The thrill of teaming up with your friends, donning that bulky vest, and of course, arming yourself with an even bulkier laser gun -- they're what we called fun back then. It was a sci-fi dream come true! If I remember correctly, Q-Zar had a green and orange team, and Laser Quest can let you type in your player name before the game. I think there was even a time when my mom would join us with our friends in the fun!

Walking With Carlos Celdran

I am a true-blue city girl, born and raised in Manila, and probably a good number of you are city folks as well. But do we really know this Manila that we call home? Taking a step back from our everyday routine of work, school, or play will eventually make one realize how little we know of the hundreds of stories that resonate in our busy streets, in the edifices we pass by, and in the old structures that we tend to ignore. It is no doubt that Manila has a story to tell... she just wants us to take some time to listen, and listen well.

V For Victory

April 10 was V-Day for many musicians, especially for those sick of ratty recording studios, filled with old and broken instruments, piles of dust, and cliché reminders of the rock and roll lifestyle.

Visita Iglesia de Manila

Come Holy Week, the faithful will troop to various churches to keep alive the tradition of the Visita Iglesia. Every year my family and I make it point to go on Maundy Thursday and perform The Way of The Cross. I do savour the mini road trip and the quality time I spend with them sans the distractions of every day life.

Discovering Casa Manila

I get giddy at the thought of old houses. Nothing delights me more than entering ancestral homes which have withstood the test of time and witnessed the madness of our history.

Cemetery Tours of Metro Manila

Cemetery Tours of Metro Manila

In the course of my “worldly” tours, nothing has caught my attention more than visits to our very own series of cemeteries in Metro Manila – the Paco Park, a small but romantic cemetery which has gone a full lifecycle; the columbary of San Agustin in Intramuros; The American Cemetery at tony Forbes Park in Makati and the Chinese Cemetery that crosses through the North and La Loma Cemetery in the northeastern part of Manila. Paco park was popularly known as the burial grounds of the wealthy neighborhood of old Manila, has now become a popular venue for garden weddings and receptions.
