About the Event

In Tony Twigg’s art a lexicon of geometric forms jostle each other through a drama of their own invention. Whether as timber constructions or in paintings, Twigg’s puppet like forms leave a respectful distance between each other. It is a crucial space that simultaneously defines his forms and ushers in the works dramatic engagement with the unseen. Here, the subject of Twigg’s art, an absent presence is found.

Begun in Sydney during 2013 and recently completed in Manila these works follow the passage of Twigg’s humanoid forms as they make their way from place to place. From there to not there and on to a place, like any other caught in a long reverberating now with a past and a future. In this resonant present the shapes of the unseen are revealed as the force of order within a precarious web of traced parameters that is at once, mystical and flatly geometric.

Tony Twigg (b. 1953 in Australia) has a strong international practice with over 40 solo exhibitions presented in Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and Philippines. Over his long career Twigg has also been known for his multi-disciplinary and film works, included in the iconic Cannes Film Festival. He studied painting in Australia and received his Master of Visual Arts from the College of Fine Arts, Sydney in 1985. He was a recipient of Australia Council Manila Studio Grant (1996), Rimbun Dahan Malaysian residency (2005), TARP Residency TAKSU Kuala Lumpur (2009) and traveled to Beijing to complete a residency with Red Gate Gallery in 2012. Twigg’s work is held in major museum collections and in private and corporate collections across South East Asia and Australia. In March this year a retrospective survey of his practice was presented by Annandale Galleries, Sydney, which included a restaging of his collaborative performance work, Life still
