The DLSU Harlequin Theatre Guild takes on the challenging facets of ASEAN + 3 integration in Kabilang Ibayo, showcasing three plays that portray how the countries struggle to unite despite their cultural heritage and political differences.
Mysteryland
A group of three young people from China, Vietnam, and Laos find themselves auditioning for a movie theme park featuring princes and princesses, dancing teacups and saucers. In their quest to join the “happy ever after” peddled by the movies they have seen as children, they discover the reality behind the Disneyfied world of America.
Robot
Set into a far future, two scientists from Singapore and Malaysia are desperate in creating the perfect robot before D-Day. Patterned after a Filipina maid, the robot brings out their difficulty in trusting what is “alien” not only in their creation, but in each other’s culture.
Ahjumma
On her wedding day, Eunchae, a Korean senior citizen, finds out the shocking truth that her friend Minjoo was once a comfort woman during World War II -- and the soldier who defiled her friend is the same man she is set to marry. Will the wedding come to a sudden halt because of the pain of the past? Or will forgiveness set them free?
Written by 20th Palanca Hall of Fame awardee and renowned playwright Nicolas Pichay, and directed by ALIW awards nominee and the Guild’s Artistic Director Romualdo “Raffy” Tejada, the three comedic plays explore the relationship of the ASEAN + 3 countries in the face of globalization.
