I heard this guy sing and he is really very very good (Excellent), no wonder he was chosen. Pang laban talaga at international quality, it would really make you proud as a Filipino.

I am very sad about this person's rise to stardom. He is becoming another example of a Filipino wanting to be a caucasian. Why? I heard in the news that he has already started taking up English phonetic courses. There is a fine line between singing to please your audience, and taking accent courses just to please foreign individuals. The latter can be understood as being embarrassed to be a Filipino. In addition, I saw him talk in an interview; he tried to speak with an American accent. But, his Filipino accent was still present. I was so ashamed at him. All the hair in my body tingled. On the other hand, as an example, I do not feel ashamend whenever I hear Manny Pacquiao speak, especially with his accent. Hearing him are one of the high points in in my life to be a Filipino. After a fight, during an interview, the way he speaks is a beacon that tells everbody: I am a Filipino, and I am proud to be one. Sadly, when I saw Arnel speak, he gave the impression: I am a Filipino, not for long.

Understand that in the entertainment industry, we have to adapt to its different demands. If improvement in the manner of speech is what Arnel is aiming for, who are we to stop him from it? Besides, a regional accent is not the ONLY mark of being filipino. It is living the essence of it. Just because Lea Salonga never had a regional accent, it doesn't mean she was never a proud filipina. Also take into consideration that singers would need to get the right accent to pull off certain song pieces. Imagine if a any of the opera singers performed a latin piece without the right enunciation. It wouldn't be right would it? Take into consideration that Arnel sings, his speech would need to be mutli-dimensional to reach a wider audience. Manny Pacquiao is a boxer. His prnounciation will never matter in the ring, his fists will.

Whether Arnel is fluent in English or not, one cannot argue that his vocal talents speaks for itself! It is only proper that Arnel strive to improve his English speaking ability not only because he must sing in English, but because he must communicate (verbally/orally & in written form) in English, with the band members, and fans. For Arnel to polish his accent in English does not mean to un-pilipino him. That's not the case at all! Arnel was hired to be the Band Leader of Journey, don't you think that the Journey members deserves to have a band leader that can communicate clearly and concsisely with them? It is for Arnel's benefit to learn to speak English fluently, because this will made him more of an asset in the Journey Band as well as add to his marketability within the United States and other countries as well.

I am proud to be a Pilipina, and I'm happy for Arnel. I would love to see Arnel in live concert in the U.S.

I've never pay any attention to any of Journey's song before, but eversince I heard Arnel's voice singing Journey's songs, rest assured that I will be buying any and all new Journey albums when it comes out...BECAUSE OF ARNEL!

It's so comical that you've already convinced yourself that what you say is true.
What's scary and dangerous though is that you're trying to convince others of your crack pot view point.

Grammar check please! Reading wrong grammar is as hard to the ear as actually hearing it. There are just some global rules (like grammar, right pitch/tone, stopping at a red light, etc.) that you just have to follow regardless of your skin color. Before you put someone down because of language, check your's first. Any Pinoy would be proud of Arnel's big break.

I agree with everyone except Gilberto. Anyone with an accent from anywhere and spoke to someone here in the States you'll get the, "I beg your pardon, can you say that again?" It gets tiring. When in Rome do what Romans do. Speaking good & proper english will help Arnel in those crazy press interviews.
Like Olivia said - he must communicate in english- fluently.
It's a global thing now he must go with the flow otherwise he'll float somewhere else.

Gilberto, in the eternal words of Didith Reyes "Bakit Ako Mahihiya?"...mag-Tagalog, he he...
posted by giosef on 2008-01-29 16:54:56
To gilberto: There's a popular saying: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." That goes for Arnel Pineda, too: "When in America, do as the Americans do." Including the American accent. If you have trouble comprehending (and even poke fun at) a Bisaya who has a strong Visayan accent when speaking Tagalog, then so are the Americans when they have trouble comprehending (and would poke fun at) a Pinoy who speaks English with a strong Philippine accent. That's why Arnel has to polish his English.

Arnel joining Journey is a shining moment for all Pinoys. Gilberto, I wish you would change your mind and be proud of him instead. Let me ask you, if Manny Pacquiao speaks English as good as Arnel, would you be ashamed of him too? Of course not. It's not how they speak, it's how they act and carry themselves that's important. The fact that they're Pinoys makes me proud of my heritage!

I stumbled upon Arnel Pineda's name while surfing the net on top Pinoy Bloggers. And when I checked his background info, I could only feel happy for him. When I got to this page, I only felt amusement for everything Pinoy. Ukrayan at pagpupuri.

Wake-up!!! Philippines or Filipinos can NOT live alone, NO MAN IS AN ISLAND. Want to be core-nationalistic, to gilberto >>>pls change your name to Lapu-lapu. Does this Gilberto ever realize that Arnel had to brave the hardcore Perry fans who would surely compare him with the musical icon? He took up speech improvement courses not to please the foreigners, but to be more suitable to his chosen profession considering that it caters to fans of different nationalities. It's bad enough reading nasty comments from foreigners (which amazingly disappeared after that explosive debut performance in Chile); but it's worse to hear a fellow Filipino put down Arnel. It's called crab mentality, man. Why don't we just support him?

Gilberto: Grabe ka naman! Wala ka namang dapat ikahiya, in fact, you should be proud of Arnel for taking the effort to polish his craft by taking the necessary steps unang-una itama pronunciation nya or magkaron ng reduction ang accent nya since he won't be confined to the Filipino audience only. Kahit nga sa ating mga Pinoy pag napansin or narinig na mali-mali grammar tenses and pronunciation mo lalaitin ka ng mga elitistang kababayan natin how much more sa international scene na grabe pa rin ang racial discrimination? And to judge him agad na he's wanting to be caucasian. Instead of encouraging him as a kababayan ida-down mo pa. Why don't you just keep your opinion to yourself?

I am proud being a "Filipino". That's the most important thing. I am proud that we have "Arnel Pineda" made it in the US. I never heard his name before, and I never heard any Journey's song too, but all I care is.. Arnel Pineda ay "Pinoy" and every Pinoy singer deserves international recognition. ' What' is important... " being proud because you are 'Pinoy" not because marunong kang mag ingles or mali mali ang grammar mo ( who cares???),. Please explain why a lot of Filipinos always envy each others when in comes to "Success". I believe this is one of the reason why Filipino's abroad never made it to the top ( real top) dahil wala tayong ginawa kung hindi mag ingitan. Can we help each other to be successful? or would you like to destroy each other and what do you get? Nothing is impossible if we help each other. I am sick and tired of all this maladroit behavior. Filipinos should love each other ( especially here in abroad)dahil walang tutulong sa atin kung hindi kamukhang mong 'Pinoy" in times of trouble.

The Lord doesn't care if you are fluent in any dialect. All "He" cares is if we love each other. Stop judging each other...the Lord is the only One Who can judge us. Be proud of ourselves ( no matter what color or what accent you have).

Filipino ka pa rin, you show your ignorance

Now he does need a speech therapist it is essential so he can communicate clearly in every interview he will attain to and being the frontman is no easy task....it is not an insult to Filipino culture. To see where Arnel is right now is fantastic. I hope they come to Orlando Florida someday. Keep up the good work Arnel and look forward for the CD to be released in June. Gilberto, your nationality (and 'nationalism', however old-fashioned your definition of it is)should not be an excuse for not educating yourself. Manny Pacquiao has worked on his English to be better understood. Arnel is doing the same. Both took the challenge of improving on the language that glues a now globalized world. I'd say both are great Filipino 'fighters' as they continue to break their own boundaries.

Your view of nationalism is very interesting though. It raises a (philosophical) question... What makes a Filipino? territory, language/accent, motivation/interest, action, symbols? If I don't sound like Pacquiao, am I less of a pinoy? If I work abroad, am I less than those who stayed? Tricky, isn't it?

Learning is great whatever your race or nationality is. Work on your grammar and I work on mine.

"one" experience or many experiences? Because if you write "one" and it's followed by "are" which is plural, one can never be plural, it's always singular bro!! I suggest you write in your little scratch paper and check the grammar first 100x before you finally type here.

To Gilberto: Speaking and singing a foreign language must go with the right accent to be understood. Imagine a Filipino song being sang by an American with an American accent, wouldn't that be funny and difficult to understand? Adapting a foreign language accent doesn't change one's nationality nor nationalistic views. You Gilberto should be the one ashamed of yourself because you're writing in English (with bad grammar LOL) & yet criticizing Filipinos trying to adapt the American-English accent? LOL WAKE UP! Don't say anything unless you know exactly what you're talking about.
