posted on Saturday, September 01, 2007

Manila Chamber Orchestra Foundation and BDO present the “MCO Arts Festival’s Dance Season 2007”, which aims to promote the best of today’s Filipino dancers and encourage young but highly talented choreographers and talents.

The first concert of the MCO Arts Festival Dance Season is “Saludo Filipino!” which acknowledges Filipino culture through dance and music by Filipino choreographies and songs. This ballet will be performed by the Vella C. Damian School of Ballet, Dance Concert Company and with guest artists from the Benildanz from the College of St. Benilde. It will be held on September 23, 2007, Sunday at the BDO South Tower (formerly EPCIB Tower I) Makati, City. Choreographers include Vella C. Damian, Arnie Umayam, Christopher Nocon, Myra Beltran and Tony Fabella. Some of the featured hit songs are from well-renowned artists such as Freddie Aguilar, Ogie Alcacid and Bamboo.

Vella C. Damian, founder and director of the Vella C. Damian School of Ballet, Inc., has been an active figure in the development of Philippine ballet education. She was commended by writers and dance critics, Steve Villaruz and Edna Vida as “one of the most respected teachers in the land…who has produced some of our finest dancers.” She is also a noted dramatic ballerina and holds the distinctions of the only Philippine ballerina for whom five full length ballets were created – Carmen, Medea, La Gitana, Camille by Eric V. Cruz (La Gitana and Camille being commissioned to music by composer Jeffrey Ching) and Haunted Ballroom by Remedios (Totoy) de Oteyza.

The Vella C. Damian School of Ballet, Inc. has its main studio in Sta. Mesa Heights, Quezon City. It also has studios at the Sta. Isabel College, New Manila Ballet Center, St. Paul College-Pasig, St. Paul College-Quezon City and New Age Gym.

The Dance Concert Company and the Vella C. Damian School of Ballet, Inc. are composed of young and promising ballet dancers.
